Cranes and hoists can create significant hazards to operators, employees, students, guests and/or visitors if operated improperly. To protect those associated with the operation of cranes and hoists the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established several standards that outline safe operating practices, inspection procedures and frequency, and training requirements.
Crane and Hoist Safety Program
To protect faculty, staff, and students that would be required to operate a crane or hoist at UNH, UNH has developed a comprehensive program. The program outlines the specific requirements for their safe use.
The program outlines the training requirements, inspection frequencies, and operational procedures for their safe use. Under no circumstance should anyone that has not completed appropriate training operate any crane or hoist at UNH.
Support from OEHS
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is available to assist individual departments that use cranes and/or hoists. Assistance can include:
- Training coordination;
- Program review and audits;
- Periodic operator observations; and
- Coordination of periodic (annual) inspections.
