UNH acknowledges its responsibility to provide a program for the safe handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous materials; to provide emergency response to incidents involving biohazardous materials; and to educate the UNH community about the safe use of these materials in research, teaching, and public service activities.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
The UNH Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) has been created to develop policies and procedures to ensure the health and safety of all faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors at UNH and to ensure all federal, state and local regulations are followed.
Biological Safety and Biosecurity Manual
Biological safety and biosecurity are integral to the use of biological materials at the University of New Hampshire. Safety and Security are achieved through the use of various containment principles, including controls, work practices and equipment which aim to protect the worker, community and environment from biological hazards. The Biological Safety and Biosecutiry Manual serves as a resource document for working safely in Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) containment, as well as the security of all biological materials on campus.
IBC Registration
All work with biological materials must be registered with the Biological Safety Officer (BSO).
Biosafety Training
All personnel/students working with biohazardous materials must be appropriately trained for the work they will be doing.
Bloodborne Pathogens
All work with human blood; body fluids; unfixed human cells, tissues, or organs; and any lab based research activities involving HIV or HBV must be done in accordance with the UNH Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.

Incidents/Accidents with Biohazards
Response to incidents/accidents with biohazards must be handled, reported, and documented following the procedures outlined in the UNH Laboratory Safety Plan and the IBC Charter.

Biohazardous Waste Disposal
Biohazardous waste generated at UNH must be chemically disinfected, physically inactivated, or shipped off-site for incineration following procedures in the UNH Biohazardous Waste Disposal Plan.

Shipment of Biohazardous Materials
All shipments involving potentially infectious, or infectious, biological materials must be done following procedures in the UNH Shipment of Biological Materials Manual.
