Gender-Affirming Care Services
Q: Can I get standard exams of whatever type I need regardless of my gender identity or expression at Health & Wellness (pap smear, breast exam, hernia test, prostate exam, etc.)?
A: Yes, you can receive standard exams provided at Health & Wellness that you need, regardless of (and sensitive to) your gender identity or expression.
Q: Does Health & Wellness provide Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
A: Yes, Health & Wellness provides HRT.
Q: Does Health & Wellness maintain information about surgeons providing Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS)?
A: Yes, Health & Wellness has information about professionals providing GCS. Call (603) 862-2856 for more information.
Q: Can I get a written referral to an endocrinologist for HRT?
A: Some insurance carriers may require a written referral for an endocrinologist. Please contact your insurance carrier prior to your appointment to see whether or not a written referral is needed and if this referral can be provided by a Health & Wellness clinician, or if it will need to be written by your primary care provider.
Q: Can I get a written referral to a surgeon for Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS)?
A: Some insurance carriers may require a written referral to a surgeon for GCS. Please contact your insurance carrier prior to your appointment to see whether or not a written referral is needed and if this referral can be provided by a Health & Wellness clinician, or if it will need to be written by your primary care provider.
Hormone Prescriptions and Blood Tests
Q: Can I get a prescription written for hormones/anti-androgens?
A: Yes, Dr. Christopher Diamond can write prescriptions for hormones/anti-androgen after there has been a hormone readiness assessment completed with a counselor/therapist.
Q: Will the pharmacy fill a prescription for hormones/anti-androgens?
A: Yes, we can fill a prescription for hormones/anti-androgens.
Q: Will hormone prescriptions be covered by the health fee?
A: The health fee does not cover the cost of hormone prescriptions. Please check with your insurance carrier to see if they will cover hormone prescriptions.
Q: Will Health & Wellness staff order blood tests related to HRT?
A: Health & Wellness clinicians can order blood tests related to HRT.
Q: Will Health & Wellness perform blood tests ordered by an outside provider?
A: Yes. Please come to Health & Wellness with clearly written orders from the ordering provider. We will also need the fax number of the ordering provider where we can fax your test results. There will be a charge for the blood tests performed.
Q: Will HRT-related blood tests be covered by the health fee?
A: The health fee does not cover the cost of HRT related blood tests. Please check with your insurance carrier to see if they will cover these lab tests.
Q: Will Health & Wellness staff help me administer HRT-related treatments (such as injections)?
A: Yes, Health & Wellness staff can assist with the administration of prescribed HRT-related treatments.
Forms & Systems
Q: Am I required to list my legal name/gender marker on Health & Wellness forms?
A: Yes, you are required to use your legal name and gender marker on forms for Health & Wellness since they are a part of your health record. Identity information on your health record needs to be consistent with the information we receive from the University and what also appears on your University ID. These all need to be consistent for verification, which is required by law.
Q: How do I get my chosen name/gender marker noted in my health record?
A: If you would like to inform us of a chosen name and/or gender marker that has not been changed legally, you can:
- Let us know in person at the Health Records and Registration Department desk.
- Call Kathy Spiers, Administrative Coordinator for Health Records and Registration at (603) 862-4594.
- Let us know while you are here for a clinical/medical appointment or wellness counseling appointment.
Please note that changes in your gender marker may impact what services are covered by your health insurance plan. Please contact your health insurance carrier for more information.
Q: Can I list/change my pronouns on Health & Wellness forms?
A: The information in our health records comes from information we receive from the University, so we do not ask for information related to gender or pronouns on our forms. If you would like to be identified by certain pronouns that are different from those in your health record, please let us know using the process listed above.
Q: How do I change my preferred name in University of New Hampshire systems?
A: You may indicate a preferred first name that will appear in documents internal to UNH by visiting this page and following the process listed.
