Residency classification at UNH determines tuition rates by evaluating a student’s eligibility for in-state or out-of-state status.
Understanding Residency Classification for In-State Tuition Eligibility
A student's residency classification for tuition purpose is determined once admitted (for degree students) or when registering (for non-degree students). A dependent student's residency is based on parent/guardian's residence unless legally emancipated.
To qualify for in-state tuition, a student (or parent/guardian) must live in New Hampshire for at least twelve (12) continuous months before the semester begins—and for reasons other than only attending UNH.
Students who may have become eligible for in-state tuition after admission can request a change in residency classification by submitting an application for in-state status and supporting documents by:
- September 1 - Fall semester
- January 1 - Spring semester
Be sure to fully complete the form and provide strong evidence that moving to New Hampshire wasn’t just for school. The burden of proof is on the student. Students will be notified of the decision via UNH email.
Citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau
The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 allows that all citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau (the “Freely Associated States”) must receive the equivalent of in-state tuition effective Academic Year 2024-25. Citizens of these countries should submit a copy of the biographic page of passport and I-94 records to the University Registrar at registrars.office@unh.edu.
