CA Story: Gaby Garcia

Gaby Garcia

Why did you apply to be a CA?

I applied to be a CA because I truly enjoy helping others. This role taps into those problem solving, leadership, communication, and collaboration skills that are so essential to life.

What is the most rewarding part of being a CA?

I think the most rewarding part of being a CA has to be the community you build with your co-CAs and fellow residents. Even though everyone tends to be more separated in the Gables Apartments compared to residential halls, putting on socials helps with developing a community that is welcoming and friendly. Through those socials I get to know my residents more and have fun :)

What is the most challenging part of being a CA?

The most challenging part is responding to incidents when on duty. I’m the kind of person that dislikes confrontation but since we’ve built a pretty respectful community, incidents haven’t been that scary. Also, at the Gables apartments there are always at least two CAs on duty at a time and it helps having a buddy.

What advice would you give to somebody who is considering applying for the CA role?

Apply. Apply. Apply. It is such a great experience especially with such a great staff to work with. They are so supportive and very understanding of class workload—they’ll make sure to help you balance work and classes. I’ve also met such wonderful people and gotten close with many of my co-CAs.
