Medical Exemption / Priority

Limited exemptions or priority may be granted to students seeking campus parking who demonstrate a medical necessity.  Only conditions affecting the student themselves are considered; caretaker roles for others are not considered for parking exceptions or priority.

First-year campus residents who are not eligible to bring a car to campus must apply for a medical exemption.
Students who are eligible for permits but who face a permit sell out must apply for medical priority.

Students seeking a medical exemption or priority must first go through Student Accessibility Services (SAS) for accommodation approval.  SAS will notify Transportation Services of your approval for parking priority/exemption.

SAS Accommodation Requests

ONCE YOUR SAS APPROVAL IS CONFIRMED, FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO REQUEST A PARKING PERMIT:

Step 1:
Submit a parking permit application.

  • Once your SAS approval is completed, go to https://unh.thepermitstore.com
  • Follow the instructions to apply for a RESIDENT WEST parking permit.
  • If Resident West is marked as sold out, apply for a spot on the Resident West waiting list.

(Eligible off-campus residents not in campus housing use NON-RESIDENT permits instead of Resident West).

Step 2:
Alert the Parking Office that your permit application is ready.

  • Email to UTS.Inbox@unh.edu
  • Notify them that your order or waiting list entry has been submitted.
  • Include your name and student ID number.

Step 3:
Monitor your email.

  • Orders and waiting list entries will be processed once you alert us to your permit order/wait-list submission.
  • If spaces are available, your permit order/wait-list entry will be expedited.  Order/wait-list status information and instructions will go to your email.
  • Waiting list offers will arrive in your email inbox; you will have 3 days from the offer to return to return to https://unh.thepermitstore.com to claim the permit.

*Spaces are limited:  Although we do set aside limited space for medical accommodation, even this space is subject to sell out.  If this happens you will be placed in a priority position on the waiting list.

FAQ:

Q.  What if I do not live in campus housing?
A.  If instead of in Campus Housing you live at one of the nearby private apartment complexes, you'll apply for a "Non-Resident" permit/wait-list instead of Resident West.

Q.  Can I get a permit closer to my residence?
A.  Exemption / priority parking is for storage parking only.  No spaces are saved in the campus core resident lots.  Resident parking is not available in employee or commuter lots.

Q.  What if the medical situation is with a family member I need to help care for?
A.  Parking exemptions and priorities are only considered for medical situations impacting the student themselves. Caretaker exemptions will not be given.

Q.  Is there any discount for a permit needed for medical necessity?
A.  No, all standard fees and regulations apply to those granted an exception or priority.

Q.  What about ADA ("handicap" space) parking?
A.  UNH does not issue ADA permits, but vehicles displaying BOTH a UNH-issued parking permit AND a state-issued ADA plate or placard may use any available ADA ("handicap") parking space on campus.

Q.  What if I need additional help getting around campus?
A.  The SAS office may also approve you for use of the Wildcat Transit Access Van to get around campus.
