Small Family Community Fellowship

The goal of the Small Family Community Fellowship is to provide opportunities for students to "Embrace NH" by applying what they learn in the classroom to real-world needs at the local level. By combining the students’ academic pathways with community service, we can enhance both student growth and the common good. Through this fellowship students strengthen and apply essential skills needed for career success.

These positions are part of the Small Family Community Fellowship.  We use a cohort model, meaning you will have the opportunity to be part of a group of interns who are trained together and are interning around the state with various community partners. In addition to the specific skills you’ll build related to your role, you’ll also spend the summer working towards earning a professional development badge in Communication. At the end of the summer, you’ll participate in a poster presentation to showcase your work. These Fellowships are only open to New Hampshire residents.

Black Heritage Trail | Ryan Cutting (History '24):

This Fellow will support the Black Heritage Trail's work raising awareness for New Hampshire’s Black history by fostering dialogues about race, diversity, and inclusion. He will do research to support their educational programs that can change the way we understand human dignity when free of historical stereotypes.

Blue Ocean Society | 

UNH Manchester preferred. The goal of the Science Communication Fellowship is to inspire the public aboard commercial whale watching trips to make a change in their lives for the betterment of the ocean community.  The Fellow will effectively interact with the public, teaching them about marine life in the Gulf of Maine, Blue Ocean Society’s research and conservation programs and what they can do to help. The Fellow would also be responsible for assisting in collecting detailed research data during the whale watching trips. The Fellow will attend pre-season orientations and trainings, weekly meetings and guest lectures to gain a better understanding of marine life in the Gulf of Maine as well as potential career opportunities.  

Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem | Andrew Clark-Hodgkins (Business Administration '26):

This Fellow will be working one-on-one with our Financial Administrator. He will learn the daily operations of overseeing the budget of the club. He will be introduced to QuickBooks, entering invoices, sales receipts and learning how to reconcile the bank account. He will also be learning team building, leadership skills, and be working with all of our youth, running activities and providing safety for all club members.

Boys & Girls Club of Manchester | 

UNH Manchester preferred. These Fellows will work with the STEM Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester to cofacilitate outdoor science activities with K-8 students at Camp Foster in Bedford, NH. The focus will be the New Hampshire terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and other environmental organisms.

Branch Hill Farm |

The Farm-Based Education Fellow will carry out the Teen Apprenticeship Program and vegetable gardens field work. This fellow will work independently at times and cooperatively at others alongside teen apprentices, farm visitors, and volunteers, modeling for Teen Apprentices what it looks and sounds like to be a high-functioning member of a team.

Chamber Collaborative of Portsmouth

The mission of the Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth is to lead the business community as a convener of people, businesses, and organizations, through communication, education, support, advocacy, and cooperative opportunities to make the Greater Portsmouth area a better, more prosperous place to live, work and play. This Fellow will be working on executing community events and creating a stronger connection between the University of New Hampshire and the Chamber and the members of the Chamber.

Coos Economic Development Corp |

The CEDC, one of nine Regional Development Corporation (RDC) in the State, has a mission to promote economic growth that fosters a strong and diverse workforce, sustainable employment, and a thriving business environment.  CEDC has the largest and most rural region of all the RDCs in the State. They are looking for a student that is interested in community economic development, business entrepreneurship, childcare, housing and/or marketing.

Great Bay Estuarine Research Reserve

This fellow will assist with two new projects funded through the Great Bay 2030 Initiative - an Educator Resource Inventory and Gap Analysis, and Development of a Coastal Access Map. Primary responsibilities would include gathering, reviewing and categorizing K-12 educational resources that foster place-based teaching such as field trip programs, lesson plans, educational kits and teacher training. The second project will involve visiting and taking pictures of coastal access sites around Great Bay and seacoast NH and researching creative ways to promote the region’s natural resources.

Grow Nashua |

Grow Nashua is seeking a fellow that would like to contribute to their innovative Lil’ Free Farmstand program that collects excess veggies from local gardeners, food banks, and farmers and redistributes them to families most in need. 

NH Department of Natural and Cultural Resources

This Fellow will assist the Community Recreation Specialist and staff in the Division of Parks and Recreation and Office of Community Recreation in various administrative and operational duties. 

NH Food Bank |

This fellow will work as the Garden Assistant at the NH Food Bank. In addition to the day-to-day maintenance of the garden, the fellow will work on developing a journal to document raised beds, seeds, plant growth, bugs, and disease.  

NH Women's Foundation |

The NH Women's Foundation's summer fellow will have the opportunity to participate meaningfully in all areas of the foundation’s work, including grants, research, advocacy, communications, development, events, and administration. Responsibilities vary based on the applicant's specific education and experience. Some potential areas of work include social media, content development, design, grant application review, event support, NH-based research, and supporting our Women Run! program. 

Portsmouth Fairy House Tour |

Help Friends of the South End plan their annual Fairy House Tour at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth! The world's largest fairy house festival includes activities such as storytelling, face painting, crafts, and games. The goal of the fellowship is to assist the event manager with creating a financially successful public event. Tasks will involve fundraising, volunteer recruitment, social media management, and more.

Rain for the Sahel and Sahara |

This position supports RAIN’s mission by helping to ensure the organization has adequate resources to carry out its work. This includes developing marketing and fundraising materials, planning and executing events, and supporting other projects that promote RAIN’s work in Niger, Africa. This opportunity can be tailored to suit your skills, interests, and growth plans - for example, fundraising, promoting cultural events, building a database, or outreach efforts.

Rochester Recreation and Arena

This Fellow will assist with daily programming, with a focus on community outreach. She'll be learning how to use recdesk software, observing and giving input on summer program planning, observing summer camp and offering daily feedback, and helping plan activities for summer camp and senior center.

The Freedom Cafe

The Freedom Café is a non-profit specialty café dedicated to ending human trafficking and the commercial exploitation of all people. The café provides a collaborative space that invites the local community to engage the issue and take action toward a traffic-free world. The Café Management Intern will assist the Executive Director in advancing the overall mission of the Freedom Café, support day-to-day operations throughout the fellowship and complete a management project to update and create training materials suited to The Freedom Cafe's new Main Street location and systems. 

The Waysmeet Center | 

The Waysmeet Center is a non-profit organization that focuses on support and empower the individual and community by creating spaces for communion, service, and social justice. This fellowship will focus on assisting the center in varied administrative tasks as well as social media management, fundraising and events programming. 

TRIO Educational Talent Search |

The mission of Educational Talent Search (ETS) is to prepare academically qualified limited income, first generation, New Hampshire youth to complete secondary school and enroll in and complete a college degree program. By providing academic advising, career, college, financial literacy and financial aid information, ETS increases educational opportunities for these youth. The summer fellow will support "Launch into College" and "Jump into College" programming and work on financial aid analysis.

Upward Bound

This Fellow will be working as a Tutor-Mentor with Upward Bound at UNH. Upward Bound is part of the Federal TRIO Programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. They provide fundamental support to high school students from low-income families or families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The Tutor-Mentors facilitate the summer residential program and prepare participants for higher education.

Check Out UNH | Emily Buehne (English and Philosophy '24):

Check Out UNH is a collaborative program between UNH and numerous local libraries to provide information and summer reading based around a theme. This fellowship will focus on developing interactive information kiosks, facilitating and supporting the summer reading program and producing and distributing a weekly newsletter and other research materials for local libraries across the state. 

Freedom Cafe | Christian Knightly (Business Administration: Management '25):

The café provides a collaborative space that invites the local community to engage the issue and take action toward a traffic-free world. Nature Groupie | Maddy Smith (Environmental Conservation & Sustainability and Political Science '24): 

This Fellow will assist New England-based conservation organizations and public agencies in implementing stewardship and environmental research projects. Staff from Nature Groupie, based at UNH Cooperative Extension, will coordinate an internship with a variety of field-based projects over the summer hosted by at least four (4) different New Hampshire environmental organizations such as land trusts, public agencies, researchers and communities.

NH Department of Natural and Cultural Resources | Emily Overhulser (Recreation Management & Policy: Outdoor Leadership & Management and Justice Studies '25):

This Fellow will assist the Community Recreation Specialist and staff in the Division of Parks and Recreation and Office of Community Recreation in various administrative and operational duties. 

NH Judicial Branch | Abi Blasi (Political Science and Sustainability '24), Equeen Xaviera (Political Science and International Affairs '23), and Olivia Dill (Political Science and International Affairs '24):

NHJB interns will participate in systemic change initiatives to improve access to justice, perceived fairness, and trust in the courts.  Fellows in this position will be assisting the Judicial Branch in their public outreach, information management, and coordination of outreach activities.

Shoals Marine Laboratory | Sullivan Kimball (Political Science '26):

The Science Communications Fellow will assist the lab with public engagement and digital outreach efforts. SML is a laboratory based in Appledore Island, Maine that’s jointly operated by Cornell University and UNH.  During this fellowship fellows can expect to: handle phone communications and DSLR photography for the laboratory, help manage SML's social media and web presence, plan and conduct interviews and work both alone and on teams with SML students and staff.  

The Waysmeet Center | Jay LaBrecque (Social Work and Justice Studies '24):

Dermatophytes | Lauren Vaccaro (Biology ’23)

Dermatophytes are fungal pathogens that infect the skin and hair of many species, with the potential for animal associated infections to cause disease in people. This Fellow will be working with the UNH Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, investigating the bacterial species associated with dermatophyte infections diagnosed in porcupines and other domesticated animals.

Fisher Population Diversity | Holly Farrell (Biomedical Science ’23)

Fisher are a mammal unique to North America, and an iconic predator of northern forests. This Fellow will work with the UNH Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, using microsatellites to characterize the population genomics of fisher in New England.

Freedom Cafe | Katie Clayton (English/Journalism '25)

The Freedom Café is a non-profit specialty café dedicated to ending human trafficking and the commercial exploitation of all people. The café provides a collaborative space that invites the local community to engage the issue and take action toward a traffic-free world. Through presentations, discussion groups, and community events, they work to educate local citizens about the complexities of the issue and its root causes, the actions necessary for preventing it, and ways to support reputable organizations working to bring about a world where all people are free.

Hawk Diversity | Tessa Baillargeon (Biomedical Science ’23)

In 2021 a massive mortality event swept up the eastern seaboard of the USA, killing off thousands of songbirds and some Cooper’s hawks. This Fellow will work with the UNH Veterinary Diagnostic Lab to compare the genomes of the affected birds, producing an important contribution to understanding bird ecology and diversity.

Moose Health | Abigail Lebsack (Animal Science ’23)

Moose are perhaps the most iconic megafauna of northern New England. Their health and population stability are a reflection of forest ecosystem health and have important impacts on wildlife agencies and ecotourism. This Fellow will analyze a large number of moose fecal and urine specimens from camera traps throughout the region. The samples and findings will be part of the first collaborative regional health assessment for the species and will be the foundation for future studies.

Harm Reduction | Kat Legier (Sociology and Women’s & Gender Studies ’22)

This Fellow will work the with NH Harm Reduction Coalition to support advocacy and programs that “meet people where they are” and support them to achieve their goals. They will provide support for programs such as syringe service, community dinners, and food pantries. They will also support infrastructure development and communications.

NH Judicial Branch | Natalie Mandes (Psychology and Justice Studies ’24) and Arzum Sepici (Psychology and Justice Studies ’23)

These Fellows will work with the NH Judicial Branch on numerous projects, such as launching and expanding its first Diversity & Inclusion program, handling assignments related to the Judicial Branch Standing Committee on Domestic Violence, providing support for the Access to Justice Commission initiative, and more.

STEM Discovery Lab | Savanna Lopez (Biotechnology ’23)

This Fellow will be directly involved in assisting the implementation of STEM youth outreach opportunities for elementary and middle school aged youth at the Granite YMCA. The Fellow will also be involved in designing and implementing creative stem learning opportunities for families, youth and community members at local organizations throughout the summer.

Indonesian Community Connect | Marc Giudice (Political Science and International Affairs '23):

Through events, programs and networking, ICC establishes access to resources, facilitates mutual understanding among different cultures and values and promotes the richness of Indonesian cultural diversity. This Fellow focused on marketing and administration, giving tours of the cultural center, communicating with business partners and undertook tasks like monthly email marketing, website updates, fundraising and point of sale operations for their gift shop.

Revolution Energy | Kati Salvatore (Master of Engineering '22)

This Fellow researched resilient and renewable energy projects in islanded communities in New Hampshire and Maine through a collaborative project with the UNH School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, the UNH Department of Natural Resources and the Environment and UNH Cooperative Extension.
