Hamel Center Undergraduate Research Directory

How to use this Directory:

  1. Browse the entries below to find one or more areas of interest, and note faculty profiles and preferences around undergraduate research.
  2. Read How to Begin for guidelines on identifying a research topic, connecting with a mentor, and preparing yourself for research.
  3. Review the Hamel Center’s list of Programs, noting options for credit-bearing independent studies during the semester (INCO 590/790), paid opportunities during the academic year, J-Term, or summer (URA; SURF), and international research (IROP).
  4. Contact faculty you’re interested in doing research with, specifying which Hamel Center program(s) you’re interested in, and include any relevant information about yourself (interests, experience, relevant coursework).

Note that not all faculty conducting research at UNH are part of this directory. You may also search for potential faculty mentors and projects in Find Scholars, browse lists of UNH Research Centers and Institutes  and Research Facilities, read faculty departmental profiles, or simply ask a current professor.

THERESA OEHMKE
I am available to mentor students in Earth sciences, environmental engineering, ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental sciences, computer science (especially students with computer vision and computational imaging interests), electrical engineering, and computer engineering. Topics include designing, prototyping, and building experimental facilities; testing and validating the facility design parameters; analyzing data using computer vision techniques; incorporating computational imaging into diagnostic imaging systems for complex fluid flows; designing and testing marine snow and other marine organism related particle motion and settling dynamics; tracking air and water pollution through image processing analysis; and analyzing the dispersion of aquatic vegetation seeds through submerged canopy meadows. These projects typically have applications to particle (plastics, seeds, etc.) and pollutant (methane gas, oil plumes, wildfire plumes, plastic leachate, etc.) in the environment.

TRACY MANDEL
Using a combination of laboratory experiments and field observations, my lab works to understand the natural physical processes that occur at ocean boundaries and coasts, and how we can better protect, restore, and consider these systems in engineering decisions. A large focus of our work is on ecohydraulics: the physics of how water interacts with coastal ecosystems. We are particularly in interested flow-vegetation interactions in local New Hampshire ecosystems such as seagrass, marshes, and dunes. Prospective undergraduate researchers should be interested in fluid mechanics!
