JEFFREY HALPERN
Sensors, electrochemistry, surface chemistry, machine learning, data analytics, neurodiversity training, STEM Education. Our lab focuses on surface modifications to capture biomolecules towards an electrochemical sensor surface for enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. We are actively involved with various detection paradigms, primarily using electrochemical analytical methods to evaluate biological media. Our group mainly focuses on analyzing ex vivo biosamples or biomedia. We also have an active education research project to evaluate best mentoring practices for undergraduate researchers in STEM across neurodiversity.

Using a combination of laboratory experiments and field observations, my lab works to understand the natural physical processes that occur at ocean boundaries and coasts, and how we can better protect, restore, and consider these systems in engineering decisions. A large focus of our work is on ecohydraulics: the physics of how water interacts with coastal ecosystems. The students who join my research team investigate first-year transitions, specializing in outdoor orientation programs across the U.S., including UNH’s HOOT. Brent’s Research Assistance Team (self-named the BRATs) study belongingness, trust, social networks, and idioculture in a supportive and hands-on academic climate.
