Standard Letter Grading System & Grade Points

The university grading system assigns letter grades to reflect academic performance, each linked to a numerical grade point value. These values are used to calculate a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).

Administrative Grades Overview

Administrative Failure (AF)

  • AF is given when a student stops participating and hasn’t completed enough work for a final grade.
  • Occurs when a student doesn't officially drop or withdraw from a course and stopped attending.
  • An AF counts as an F in GPA calculation.
  • Instructors report last date of attendance when assigning an AF.
  • An AF can affect financial aid or military/veteran benefits.

Incomplete (IC) Grade

  • An Incomplete (IC) can be given only if most of the coursework is already completed and the instructor approves extra time.
  • Students are responsible for requesting the IC grade and completing the remaining work.
  • Once completed, the final grade must be submitted to the college dean.
  • The required form must be filed with the Registrar by mid-semester of the next term.
  • Extensions past mid-semester require a petition approved by the instructor and the dean, and are granted only for unusual circumstances.
  • If the work is not completed on time, the IC becomes an F.
  • An IC in the final semester will delay graduation, even if the course isn’t required to graduate.

IX Grade

  • An IX grade means the instructor did not submit a final grade for the student or small group of students.
  • No grade will appear until the instructor submits it to the Registrar’s Office.
  • Once received, late grades are usually updated within 24 hours and viewable in Webcat.
  • To get proof of grade, order an official transcript or print grades from Webcat.

Non-Standard Grades

Pass/Fail Grading Option

Undergraduate degree students may choose the Pass/Fail grading option for certain courses without impacting GPA. The grade of “Pass” (P) earns credit but does not affect GPA, while a “Fail” (F) does not earn credit, the Pass/Fail grade is recorded on the student's transcript. Not all courses are eligible, and some restrictions apply based on major and/or degree requirements.
