SAARA Launches "Sibling Rivalry Shouldn't Hurt" Campaign

The SAARA team is excited to launch an awareness campaign this month with the theme, "Sibling Rivalry Shouldn't Hurt." Rivalry is normal and expected between siblings, but many parents and professionals confuse sibling rivalry with potentially harmful behaviors. Aggressive and abusive sibling behaviors should not be ignored or dismissed. They can have lifelong negative impacts on mental health and relationships. Parents and professionals should understand what behaviors cross the line and when to intervene.

With this month-long social media awareness campaign, we hope to increase knowledge among professionals and the public of what sibling rivalry typically looks like, and when sibling behaviors cross the line to become harmful. By increasing recognition of sibling aggression and abuse, SAARA hopes to improve safety and well-being for all children.

SAARA offers education on this topic on our website, including materials tailored for siblings, parents and families, as well as professionals and practitioners. We also encourage you to check out our latest Psychology Today blog post, "Sibling Rivalry Shouldn't Hurt."
