Students may propose external experiences, like internships, to count for Honors Units if the experience is sponsored by a faculty member with relevant content expertise, who can confirm the pedagogical value of the experience. If a faculty member agrees to sponsor an Honors experience, they take on the following responsibilities:
- Evaluate the proposed experience. To count as an Honors experience, it should be above and beyond what an average student in the discipline would do.
- Coordinate with the host site to complete an Academic Learning Agreement, including learning objectives for the experience.
- Establish any supplemental requirements, such as check-in meetings or reflection papers.
- Evaluate whether learning outcomes are met.
- Confirm the number of hours completed by the student.
The Honors College will work with you, the student, and the host site on required documentation and paperwork, which needs to be completed before the beginning of the experience. Required forms and agreements include:
- Affiliation Agreement between UNH and the host
- Academic Learning Agreement for the specific experience
- Student Policies, Risk Acknowledgment, and FERPA Release
- Approval from NH Board of Labor (ONLY if the experience is unpaid or paid less than minimum wage, and takes place in New Hampshire)
- UNH Work-Based Learning Tracking Form
