Yes. You must read the policy details for a full list of restrictions and excluded activities, but below are a few examples:
Eligible UNH travelers are not covered in: United States (defined as the 50 United States and the District of Columbia).
Payments for services rendered without the authorization or intervention of Cigna, or its designee are excluded.
If International SOS is consulted first and organizes the care, they will seek approvals directly from Cigna.
International SOS cannot seek approvals after the traveler receives care.
If a traveler seeks care without Cigna’s approval, they will need to pay up-front and file a claim to be reimbursed.
Preventative or non-emergency routine care will not be covered.
Prescription drugs that are prescribed abroad for illnesses and accidents that occur abroad during the UNH-related activity are covered at 100% of the actual charge.
Medications that are prescribed in the U.S. prior to travel are considered as preventative or non-emergency routine and are excluded.
There is no exclusion. (A pre-existing condition is one for which you sought medical advice, were diagnosed, received care or treatment, or were recommended care or treatment.) If you become ill abroad it will be covered even if it is a result of a pre-existing condition.
However, routine tests and medications prescribed in the U.S. will not be covered abroad as these will be considered preventative or routine care.
No. (Deductible means the dollar amount of Covered Expenses that must be incurred as an out-of-pocket expense by each Insured per Injury or Sickness before payment is made by the claims company.)
International SOS can advance payment if needed to secure your admission to a hospital because of sickness or accident. On occasion, there may be a hospital that will not accept advance payment from a third party. In these circumstances, International SOS may refer you to a facility that will accept advance payments.
Claims Processing
Eligible travelers should call International SOS for all situations in which the traveler needs medical or security assistance. If International SOS obtains approvals and pays for the service, they will file a claim with the insurance company and be reimbursed directly from the insurance company. The eligible UNH traveler does not need to submit any paperwork.
If International SOS does not have a billing agreement with the facility or they were not involved with organizing the service and approvals, the traveler will need to organize the claim directly with the insurer. Refer to the UNH Claims Process page for forms and instructions.
Once received by the company, your claim will be processed and paid according to the terms of the insurance policy. Please note that you are responsible for the cost of any services not covered by the travel insurance plan.
If you have questions about a specific claim or a claims payment, email info@univhealthplans.com.
