Welcome to the Democracy Imperative!

Who We Are We are a new national network of multidisciplinary scholars, campus leaders, and civic leaders in the fields of democracy building, public dialogue and deliberation, and social change.
Our Mission To improve public life and advance deliberative democracy in and through higher education.
What We Do We are a resource to individuals and institutions that strive to strengthen their capacity to teach, learn, and generate knowledge about the arts, skills, and habits of democracy.

We are advocates for education in democratic principles of justice, equity, and freedom and in democratic practices of inclusive dialogue, informed reasoning, shared governance, conflict transformation, and collaborative policy and decision-making.
Our members are national, and membership is free.

Upcoming Events

*When we present at a conference, we also arrange for a TDI informal gathering. TDI will be present at the following conferences:

  • TDI is holding a regional gathering in Denver, CO on June 12, in partnership with Regis University's Institute on the Common Good. The meeting will take place from 10 am – 1 pm. This gathering precedes Everyday Democracy's national conference in Denver June 12-14.For more information contact Nancy Thomas.
  • Public scholars from across the country will discuss the ways in which their work is more than "academic." Taking place June 10-11 at George Mason University, Beyond the Academy: Engaging Public Life, is welcoming abstracts for the program.

Notable Publications

  • In the may/June 2008 issue of Change magazine, Harry Boyte has an article, "Against the Current: Developing the Civic Agency of Students."
  • The latest issue of Diversity & Democracy explores multiple forms of community engagement through which students investigate their own civic identities.
  • AAC&U has a new publication out, Civic Engagement at the Center. Based on work of the Bonner Foundation and authored by Ariane Hoy and Wayne Meisel, the monograph highlights developmental models for students’ civic learning and socially responsible leadership implemented at 77 campuses. The monograph describes key elements of the co-curricular model, research on its impact on students, and emerging civic engagement minor created to complement decades of work in student affairs.
