At the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of New Hampshire, scientists are conducting research that not only assesses the state of our native bees but also developing ways that citizens can help support these important members of our ecological and agricultural communities.

Earth Day may come just once a year, but for scientists with the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of New Hampshire, every day is Earth Day. Experiment station scientists work year-round conducting leading ecological research that helps sustain the state and region’s natural resources and environment.

Scientists at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) working in the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station are conducting research that not only assesses the state of our native bees but also develops ways that citizens can help support these members of our ecological and agricultural communities. 

A love of animals set Jessica Fury ’19 on a path to a UNH education. Now, that same passion has her about to embark on a unique career: Fury is moving from the UNH Organic Dairy Research Farm where she helped manage the dairy herd to Santa’s Village in Jefferson to manage the park’s reindeer herd.

The Woodman Horticultural Research Farm focuses on the research, teaching, and outreach on the production of horticultural and ornamental crops. Research projects include Integrated Pest Management (reduce dependence on pesticide applications), pollinator habitat assessment, using high tunnels to hasten and extend the growing season for fruits and vegetables, using reflective plastic mulches to increase per-acre yields of vegetables, evaluating seedless table grape and eggplant varieties, breeding organic strawberries, redomesticating quinoa in New Hampshire, and leading the most expansive kiwiberry breeding research project in the nation.

New Hampshire’s commercial oyster farming industry is strong and growing, with the substantial growth potential to increase production, according to a researcher with the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of New Hampshire.

A University of New Hampshire researcher says oyster production in the state is only a small fraction of what it could be. Ray Grizzle, research professor of biological sciences, says the total number of farms is probably nearing the maximum for the Little Bay area, but production isn’t yet.

NH Agricultural Experiment Station researcher Dr. Becky Sideman is a professor of plant biology and extension professor and specialist in sustainable horticulture production. Large, extreme events such as hurricanes and superstorms are becoming more frequent under a changing climate. Researchers with the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of New Hampshire are looking to new findings from a major hurricane in Puerto Rico to understand how large storms may affect New England watersheds, streams, and river networks.
