UNH Receives $35M from NOAA for Ongoing Ocean Mapping Work

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM) has received $35.7 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to continue the Joint Hydrographic Center, a NOAA partnership and a national ocean-mapping research center. The funding, granted through a competitive process, provides the center with $7,151,000 per year for five years, through 2015.

UNH N.H. Authors Series Presents Poet Wesley McNair Oct. 17, 2010

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire's N.H. Authors Series brings poet Wesley McNair to campus Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the 5th floor reading room of the Dimond Library.

McNair has written nine collections of poetry, two books of nonfiction, and edited six anthologies of poetry. His latest work is the newly released "Lovers of the Lost, New & Selected Poems." A memoir, "The Words I Chose" also has been recently released.

UNH Researcher Helps Identify Key Reproductive Hormone in Oldest Vertebrate

DURHAM, N.H. -- Looking at a hagfish - an eyeless, snot-covered, worm-like scavenger of the deep -the last thing that comes to mind is sex. Yet the reproductive functioning of these ancient vertebrates is such an enduring enigma that a gold medal was once offered to anyone who could elucidate it.

Healthcare and Economy Drag Down Obama Approval Rating in NH

DURHAM, NH - For the first time since taking office, more New Hampshire adults disapprove of President Barack Obama's job performance than approve. Obama also receives a negative net favorability rating for the first time among Granite Staters.

These findings are based on the latest WMUR Granite State Poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Five hundred fifteen (515) randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by telephone between Sept. 23 and Sept. 29, 2010. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.3 percent.

UNH Holden Lecture Focuses on Interdisciplinarity at American Universities Oct. 12

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire welcomes Jerry Jacobs, a specialist in women's employment and employment inequity, who will discuss the growing trend of interdisciplinarity on American college campuses at the annual Holden Lecture Oct. 12, 2010.

"Interdisciplinarity, Specialization, and the Intellectual Map of the 21st Century University" takes place at 12:40 p.m. in Demeritt 112. The lecture is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Department of Sociology, and is free and open to the public.

UNH and UNH Chapter of AAUP Jointly Announce Return to Contract Negotiations

DURHAM, N.H. -The University of New Hampshire administration and the UNH chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP)--representing full-time faculty--renewed contract negotiations Sept. 22, 2010. Weekly negotiating sessions have already been scheduled.

In June the two parties agreed to a one-year contract, effective July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010.

Update: Employed Wives Bring Home Almost Half of the Bacon in 2009

DURHAM, N.H. - In the second year of the recession, wives' contributions to family earnings leapt again, jumping two percentage points from 45 percent in 2008 to 47 percent in 2009. This rise, documented in a new fact sheet from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire, marks the largest single-year increase in 15 years.
