The Prevention Innovations leadership team directs the unit’s initiatives and projects and is made up of researchers and practitioners with expertise in violence prevention, research, evaluation and direct services fields. We work nationally and internationally with colleges and universities, local, state and national organizations, and the U.S. military. Our funding includes current and previous support from: the U.S. Office of Victims of Crime, the Office of Violence Against Women, the Family Violence Prevention Fund, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Justice, the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and the New Hampshire Department of Justice.




Sierra Garbin
PIRC Graphic Design Intern

Sierra Garbin is a student at Great Bay Community College, very close to graduating with her Associates in Digital Media Communications. With a passion for social justice and design alike, she has taken the opportunity to work with PIRC as they develop this year’s marketing strategies and materials. Continuing her work from the Fall semester, she will design educational toolkits for RA’s, social media posts, merchandise, and advertising. Sierra is excited to learn more about design and its relation to customer and business desires. Her passion lies in the arts and she is very excited to make it part of her career. Other passions of hers include nature and hiking, spinning poi, seeing live music and podcasts, and food. 

Alicia Popielarczyk

PIRC Communications Intern

Alicia Popielarczyk is a senior at the University of New Hampshire, majoring in Communication with a double minor in health management policy and psychology. Alicia is an efficient, high energy worker whose positive attitude and diligent organization exemplifies her adaptability in the workplace. She is a compassionate listener, and is eager to learn as much as possible. Alicia wishes to gain firsthand experience to enhance career goals in human resources, health and human services, marketing and observations in research and design. She is well equipped with strong interpersonal communication skills. Outside of the workplace, Alicia enjoys spending time with loved ones, nature, hiking, snowboarding, the beach, cooking and is passionate about environmental protection.

Emily Smith 

PIRC Communications Intern
Emily Smith is a senior at the University of New Hampshire majoring in Communication with a minor in Political Science. Emily has always been drawn to helping others, which shines through with her involvement in UNH’s Animal Welfare Alliance, and her volunteer work with the NHSPCA, and her own personal political activism. Emily is working with PIRC as a Communications Intern to help curate online posts and initiatives, hoping to reach a wide audience. During her time at PIRC, Emily is hoping to learn more about how to build an online presence and learn more about a topic that is so important to her.


Sarah Filion

PIRC Research Intern
Sarah Filion is a senior at the University of New Hampshire majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Women’s Studies.  Sarah is interested in medicine and research; she is currently pursuing her senior thesis in a genetics lab on campus and working for Durham’s ambulance service, McGregor Memorial EMS.  Sarah is passionate about social justice and community service – two principles that finally aligned when she because an advocate for UNH Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program, UNH SHARPP.  Driven by the idea that she could help eliminate sexual violence on her campus, Sarah joined PIRC.  Integrating her passion for healthcare and advocacy, Sarah is working with PIRC to bring uSafeUS to First Responders and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.  

Jenn Plourde

PIRC Research Intern
Jenn Plourde is a senior at the University of New Hampshire, majoring in Sociology and Justice Studies. Upon completion of her undergraduate dual degree in May, she hopes to continue on to receive a master’s in Justice Studies. Following this she plans on pursuing a career in victim advocacy in some capacity, as public service is something close to her heart. She enjoys vacationing in Wells, Maine with her family at their cottage and spending time at the beach. She also enjoys traveling and spent a semester abroad in Galway, Ireland. She was able to travel to Spain, Italy, Greece, and Amsterdam during her time abroad, and has many other locations on her travel bucket list.
