Sailing/Kayaking/Paddleboarding Summer 2026: Week 5 - July 20-24

The UNH Community Sailing Centre (UNHCSC) offers seven one-week sessions with a variety of class offerings for students ages 5-18 of any ability. Morning sessions run from 9am-12pm. Afternoon sessions run from 12:30-3:30pm.

All classes are physical in nature. Sailing is highly conceptual, and students learn at different rates and in different ways. The program allows for these differences by helping kids master the requisite skills at their own pace. Students wear life jackets and PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) at all times while on the docks or in boats. Students in Guppy must provide their own PFD; all other classes can use those provided by the Sailing Centre. Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times.

Swim Check: Students under the age of 18 are required to pass a swim check at the start of each session. The check is a swim of 25 yards and treading water for 5 minutes. The Guppy check is done with life jackets on and is 15 yards swimming and 2 minutes treading water. Contact diana.weidenbacker@unh.eduif you have any questions about the swim check.

All sessions are held at the UNHCSC at Mendums Pond, 50 Recreation Dr., Barrington, NH. Details regarding drop off locations, times, and other information is sent to enrolled participants prior to the session start date from program staff. Please be sure the email address provided while enrolling is that of a parent/legal guardian, not the participating student.

Guppy is a class tailored specifically for our youngest participants, fostering comfort and familiarity with boats. This unique session incorporates exciting pond science activities and introduces young adventurers to the world of watercraft, featuring mini sit-upon kayaks, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and sailing. The emphasis is on enjoyable learning. There is a swim check requirement while wearing personal flotation devices (PFD).

Class Type: Youth Sailing Beginner-Intermediate

Seamen (Ages 7 ½-11)

Ideal for beginners aged 7 ½ to 11, the Seamen class introduces fundamental skills for small sailboats. Participants delve into rigging, de-rigging, boat and equipment care, capsize recovery, wind understanding, and basic maneuvers using Bugs. This class serves as a foundational experience, with many participants continuing until they master essential skills.

Mates (Ages 12-18)

The Mates class introduces dinghy sailing or skill refinement from previous experience. Utilizing FJ Boats, participants focus on rigging, de-rigging, boat and equipment care, capsize recovery, and mastering tack and gybe maneuvers. Progressing through double-handed boats and advanced skills, participants often spend several weeks in this class before progressing to the Skippers class.

Class Type: Youth Sailing Advanced

Ensigns (Ages 7 ½–11; Prerequisite: Seamen class or equivalent)

Designed for those who have completed the Seaman class or its equivalent, Ensigns builds on the basics, emphasizing finer points of boat handling and sail theory. Students sail Bugs with race sails, delving into advanced boat handling and preparation. Prerequisite: Seaman class or equivalent.

Mariners (Ages 8-11; Prerequisite: Ensign class or its equivalent)

Building competence and confidence, the Mariners program introduces both small and larger boats. Aimed at those interested in advanced boat handling and potential racing, students sail RS Teras, Bugs, Sunfish, and other boats.

Skippers (Ages 12-18; Prerequisite: Mates class or its equivalent)

Covering advanced boat handling, tuning, and sail trim, Skippers classes use FJ’s and 420’s, introducing bigger boats. Ideal for those interested in developing advanced skills or learning to race, students use FJ’s, Sunfish, Blue Jays, and other boats.

Class Type: Sailing - Racing

Mendums Seacoast Sailing Team (MSST)

Junior Racing Team (Ages 12-18; Prerequisite: Skippers class or its equivalent) Tailored for experienced sailors, the Junior Racing Team focuses on developing and refining racing skills. Participants learn advanced techniques, kinetics, racing tactics, boat maintenance and strategy in both fleet and team racing. Weekly event travel is part of this class, with advanced sailors attending additional regattas. Boats used include single, double, and triple-handed vessels. This one-week session is for Laser and Club 420 racers. Consideration for students from the Mariner class are on a case-by-case basis.

Our Kayaking program introduces and refines paddling skills in kayaks. Participants learn correct strokes, rescue techniques, wet exits, and re-entry. The program includes games and lake exploration, fostering a well-rounded kayaking experience. Additionally, kayakers in this program have the opportunity to mentor Guppy students with their mini-kayaks.

Class Type: Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Only (Ages 8-18)

Click the '+' on the registration block(s) to enroll. Review the Online Registration Instructions before enrolling for the best outcome. This includes instructions for creating a Family or Student/Individual account.

Family Accounts are recommended for enrolling multiple children from one family in any UNH Youth Program. If you already have an account in our system, you will be asked to log into either a Family or Student Account after adding the program to your shopping cart. Be sure to use the username and password for the type of account you wish to log into. We recommend attempting to log into the Student or Family account before enrollment opens as this will minimize difficulty and time while enrolling. Email youth.programs@unh.edu if you require assistance recovering your account information. Do not create a new account if you have one already.

If you don't have an account already, you can set up an account at any time, even before you begin the registration process. If creating a student account, the account profile should be in the name of the participating student, but the email should be that of a parent/guardian. Review the Online Registration Instructions before creating a new account.

Payments are made at the time of online enrollment. Accepted forms of payment for youth programs are VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Paper checks are accepted only under very limited circumstances (ex: from a school or organization). We do not accept cash payments or e-checks and we cannot take payments over the phone.

A participant cannot attend a youth program unless they are paid in full. Any participant with an unpaid balance may be locked from future enrollment in any youth program until the balance is paid.

Summer Youth Programs

  • In addition to the program fees, participants in summer youth programs are subject to a non-refundable $10 registration fee once per student at checkout. This supports use of our supplemental registration software and health & wellness needs.
  • Some programs will offer a deposit option of 25% of the camp fee. Whether a deposit is offered or not will be noted in the program description and will show in the shopping cart during enrollment. The deposit option is available until the date indicated in the program description.
  • If a deposit option is not offered, payment is due in full at the time of enrollment.
  • All account balances are due by the date indicated in the program description, but can be paid before that date. Failure to pay the balance by the due date may result in the participant being dropped from the program. For payment instructions, visit: To Pay an Outstanding Balance
  • Families are responsible for making a timely final payment. There is no automatic payment process in place.

Refund Procedures

Most summer youth programs follow these refund procedures:

  • Participants who request a Drop/Transfer 15 or more days prior to the session start date receive a refund minus a minimum $75 administrative fee.
  • Participants who request a Drop/Transfer within 14 or fewer days of the session start date or on/after the session start date will not receive a refund.
  • If the session is canceled by UNH before the session start date, a full refund will be issued.

For instructions on requesting a Drop or Transfer, visit: Drop & Transfer Requests

UNH has partnered with CampDoc to quicken the enrollment process. Enrollments and payments are done here through our current enrollment system, but no registration questions will be required at that time. Within a few days of enrolling, the email provided in the student or family account will receive an email prompting completion of the registration questions.

Please note that overnight camp roommate requests are done during the CampDoc process, not at the time of enrollment.

It is important that a parent/guardian responds to the CampDoc email and completes the registration questions promptly. Families who enrolled a child in a UNH Youth Program in Summer 2023 or after will likely already have a CampDoc account. Even if the student already has a CampDoc account, a parent/guardian should log into the student's account each time they enroll in a program to review and complete any necessary questions for a program or year.

All registration questions must be 100% complete in CampDoc before a student can attend a youth program.

For more information, including the CampDoc Support Line, review our CampDoc page.
