The New York Times: The U.S. birthrate has dropped again. The pandemic may be accelerating the decline.

The birthrate declined for the sixth straight year in 2020, according to the federal government. Kenneth Johnson, a senior demographer at the Carsey School, has calculated that together with the rise in deaths — up by about 18 percent from 2019 — the drop in births is contributing to the aging of the American population: A total of 25 states had more deaths than births last year.

Former NH Listens Program Manager Andres Mejia Jr. has been named full-time Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice for the Exeter Region Cooperative School District. Mejia began August 1 in this newly created position, where he will educate, advise, and train the community on their role in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. 

The Morning Sun: Kansas July Tax Receipts Beat Estimate By $60M As Covid Resurgence Threatens Economic Recovery

The Pittsburg, Kansas-based Morning Sun newspaper recently reported that the state taxes collected in Kansas have been largely unaffected by the resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic and were higher than to be expected. A report conducted in July by the research team at Carsey School of Public Policy showed Kansas was one of the only states, out of 14 total, with a larger economy following the first quarter of 2021.

NH Listens Fellow and former NH Listens program manager Andres Mejia Jr. has been named the new Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice for the Exeter Region Cooperative School District in Southern New Hampshire. A graduate of the Carsey School's Master in Community Development program, Mejia has worked at UNH as a social justice educator for several years.
