UNH Program to Address Direct Care Workforce Shortage

DURHAM, N.H. - A new program from the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability will address the growing need for direct care workers to support the state's aging community. The program, DirectConnect: Partnering to Expand and Train New Hampshire's Direct Care Workforce, is funded by a three-year, $2.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment & Training Administration.

Watters Appointed to Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission

DURHAM, N.H. - Prof. David Watters has been appointed by Gov. John Lynch to serve as a commissioner on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.

Watters is a professor of English at the University of New Hampshire, director of the Center for New England Culture, and is a second-term state representative for Strafford District 4, Dover. As a member of the Fish and Game and Marine Resources Committee in the NH Legislature, he will work to present the New Hampshire position on matters before the commission.

Spring Arrives at the UNH Greenhouse Open House March 25 - 26, 2011

DURHAM, N.H. -Usher in spring with a visit to the University of New Hampshire Macfarlane greenhouses during the annual open house Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26, 2011. This year's event will again provide displays and plenty of information to help chase away winter blues and welcome spring. The greenhouses will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days.

UNH Police Make Arrests in Alexander Hall Fight

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire Police Department arrested three UNH students and a Charlestown man in connection with the February 27, 2011, reported assault outside Alexander Hall that triggered a campuswide Clery Act alert.
 
Arrested and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct were:

    ·       Alexander Siegel, 18, of 19 Butternut Circle, Holden, Mass. (UNH student)

Northeast Passage to Host Boston Sled Hockey Tournament March 11 - 13

DURHAM, N.H. - The Northeast Passage Wildcats, the University of New Hampshire's sled hockey team, will be hosting a tournament March 11-13, 2011, in Dedham, Mass. Northeast Passage is a program of the University of New Hampshire and offers adaptive sports and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities.

The More Secure You Feel, the Less You Value Your Stuff, UNH Research Shows

DURHAM, N.H. - People who feel more secure in receiving love and acceptance from others place less monetary value on their possessions, according to new research from the University of New Hampshire.

The research was conducted by Edward Lemay, assistant professor of psychology at UNH, and colleagues at Yale University. The research is presented in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology in the article "Heightened interpersonal security diminishes the monetary value of possessions."
