UNH Hospitality Management Department Hosts Wine Expo May 3

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire Department of Hospitality Management, in conjunction with Horizon Beverages, will host the 1st Annual VIN EXPO NH Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at the Whittemore Center Arena. 

The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

There will be hundreds of wines from around the world to taste, hors d'oeuvres, carving stations, international cheeses, and live music. Proceeds will benefit scholarships for hospitality management students.

UNH Equestrians Win Regional Championship; Head to Nationals May 5 - 8

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire Equine Program's Intercollegiate Hunt Seat Association (IHSA) Equestrian team won the Zone I (northeast) Team Reserve Championship and will advance to the IHSA National Championships for the first time in program history. In addition, Carolyn Kelsey '11 (Deerfield) and Kate Frazier '12 (Bristol, Conn.) have qualified to compete at the national show as individuals.

Carsey Institute: Americans Believe Climate Change is Occurring, but Disagree on Why

DURHAM, N.H. - Most Americans now agree that climate change is occurring, but still disagree on why, with opinions about the cause of climate change defined by political party, not scientific understanding, according to new research from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire.

Republicans most often point to natural causes of climate change while Democrats most often believe that human activities are the cause. The greatest polarization occurs among people who believe they have the best understanding.

Celebrated Restaurant Owners Discuss Food and Memory April 26 at UNH

DURHAM, N.H. -The University of New Hampshire welcomes two celebrated New England restaurant owners who will present a lecture about locally influenced businesses, travel, and food writing, and the relationship between food and memory.

The lecture with writer and sommelier Dedrie Heekin and her chef and husband Caleb Barber will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2011, from 12:40 to 2 p.m. in McConnell Hall, Room 208. The lecture will focus on Heekin's new collection of essays, "Libation: A Bitter Alchemy." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Massachusetts Justice James Milkey Speaks on Law and Environment at UNH April 29

DURHAM, N.H. -James Milkey, associate justice on the Massachusetts Appeals Court and a legal expert on environmental issues, will speak at the University of New Hampshire Friday, April 29, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. The talk, which is free and open to the public, is in DeMeritt Hall Room 240 and is sponsored by UNH's Environmental Engineering Program and Environmental Research Group. Milkey will share his thoughts on the legal ramifications of environmental issues like climate change and carbon dioxide regulation.

UNH Police Arrest Local Man for Drug Possession

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire Police Department, in cooperation with the Durham Police Department, arrested 22-year-old Jordan Lawrence of 22 Strafford Ave., Durham, Thursday, April 14, 2011, on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Drug as part of an ongoing investigation. 

In addition to seizing a quantity of illicit drugs, police took a shotgun from his residence during their search.  Police expect additional arrests to follow.

UNH and Partners Host Informational Sessions April 21 and 22 on Government Grants for Small Businesses

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire and its business partners will host a series of informational sessions for small businesses seeking government grants through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

The STTR and SBIR are grant programs targeted to small businesses to fund innovation, research and discovery of new methods, products, and processes. Grants are available from 11 federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and the National Institutes of Health. 

University of New Hampshire Student Awarded Prestigious Truman Scholarship

DURHAM, N. H. - University of New Hampshire junior Brooks Payette has been selected as a 2011 Truman Scholar, a prestigious national award that provides up to $30,000 for graduate studies in public service fields. More than 602 applicants from 264 colleges and universities vied for one of the 60 scholarships awarded this year.

Network New Hampshire Now to Break Ground on Statewide High-Speed Broadband Network

DURHAM, N.H. — Network New Hampshire Now (NNHN) today began the first phase in bringing affordable broadband access to the state's under-served citizens, schools and businesses by awarding a N.H.-based company a contract to construct a middle-mile fiber-optic network.
