UNH Professor Receives Prestigious Fulbright to Study in Hong Kong

DURHAM, N.H. - Monica Chiu, associate professor of English and director of the University Honors Program at the University of New Hampshire, has received a prestigious Fulbright Award to teach and conduct research in Hong Kong during the 2011-12 academic year.

Chiu will teach courses and give lectures in Asian American literature and American literature in the American Studies department at Hong Kong University.

UNH Professors Usher in Inaugural Science Café New Hampshire May 24

DURHAM, N.H. - Two professors at the University of New Hampshire will usher in the first meeting of the Science Café New Hampshire, monthly gatherings aimed at bringing more science into public discussion of scientific topics.

Mary Stampone, assistant professor of geography and the New Hampshire State Climatologist, and Lawrence Hamilton, professor of sociology and senior fellow at the Carsey Institute, will join Rhett Lamb, planner for the City of Keene, for the first café, "Climate Change in New Hampshire?" at 7 p.m. May 24, 2011, at The Barley House in Concord.

UNH Engineers Win Regional Bridge-Building Competition

DURHAM, N.H. - Fifteen civil engineering students from the University of New Hampshire won the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Northeast regional Steel Bridge Competition, defeating 13 other teams, including Boston-based competitors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Northeastern University. Winning the competition, which was in Quebec City, Canada, in April, earned the UNH team a spot at the national competition at Texas A&M May 21, 2011.

University of New Hampshire Student and Alum Awarded Prestigious Fulbright Scholarships

DURHAM, N. H. - A University of New Hampshire senior and a 2010 alumna have received prestigious Fulbright Scholarships that will provide them support to teach and conduct research abroad during the 2011-2012 academic year.

UNH senior Ashley Haselton will teach English in Kenya while Melody Chapin, who graduated UNH in December 2010, will conduct research in São Paulo, Brazil.

Deepwater Horizon Spill Threatens More Species Than Legally Protected

DURHAM, N.H. - Marine species facing threats from the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico far exceed those under legal protection in the United States, a new paper in the journal BioScience finds. University of New Hampshire professor Fred Short and others found 39 additional marine species beyond the 14 protected by federal law that are at an elevated risk of extinction. These species, which range from whale sharks to seagrass, should receive priority for protection and restoration efforts, the authors advocate.

UNH Developers Share Honors for Oil Spill Response Tool

DURHAM, N.H. - A Web-based oil spill response tool developed by the University of New Hampshire's Research Computing & Instrumentation Center (RCI) has been honored as a finalist for the prestigious Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal. The tool - Environmental Response Management Application, or ERMA® - was developed in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the UNH/NOAA Coastal Response Research Center and was essential in coordinating the response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
