UNH Launches Joint Sustainable Agro-Ecosystems Lab With Chinese Academy

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire has launched a joint research laboratory with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) to promote international research in agricultural development and the environment, announced Tom Brady, dean of the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA) at UNH recently. The laboratory will be located on the campus of the CAAS Institute for Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP) in Beijing.

UNH Therapeutic Riding Program Seeks Volunteers

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire Therapeutic Riding Program is seeking volunteers for its summer session, which runs July 6 through August 18, 2011. Classes are Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Time commitments are flexible and can be as little as 45 minutes, one day per week.

Carsey Institute: Deaths Outpace Births in Increasing Number of American Communities

DURHAM, N.H. - In an increasing number of American communities, more residents are dying than being born, resulting in a natural population decrease that has been particularly acute in rural areas, according to new research from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire.

"Last year, 24 percent of all U.S. counties experienced natural decrease. And, for the first time in U.S. history, deaths now exceed births in an entire state," said Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer with the Carsey Institute and professor of sociology at UNH.

Meet Your Milk at UNH Open Barn June 18

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire and Granite State Dairy Promotion will host the annual free UNH Open Barn Saturday, June 18, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at UNH's Fairchild Dairy Teaching and Research Center.

Free New Hampshire-made milk and ice cream, wagon rides, tours, and visits with the UNH milking cows and calves are highlights of the day's activities. Visitors can try their hands at making butter and ice cream, enjoy games and prizes, and learn surprising facts about dairy nutrition and the dairy industry in New Hampshire.

Carsey Institute: People in Poorest Rural Areas Less Involved in Their Communities, Less Trusting of Neighbors

DURHAM, N.H. - Residents in chronically poor rural communities are less likely to trust, get along with and help their neighbors, and are generally less involved with their communities, according to new research from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire.
