Investors Return to Seed and Start-Up Stages

DURHAM, N.H. - The angel investor market in the first two quarters of 2011 showed signs of stabilization since the 30 percent market correction in the second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009, with total investments totaling $8.9 billion, an increase of 4.7 percent over the same period in 2010, according to the Center for Venture Research at the University of New Hampshire. 

World Authority on Genocide to Deliver UNH Holocaust Lecture Oct. 20

DURHAM, N.H - One of the world's leading authorities on genocide will deliver the Hans Heilbronner Lecture at the University of New Hampshire Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011.

Presented by the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of History, the lecture "Genocide in a Multiethnic Town: Event, Origins, Aftermath" begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Murkland Hall Auditorium (Murkland 115). The lecture and following roundtable discussion are free and open to the public and sponsored by the Endowed Fund for Holocaust Education.

UNH Leads National Push for Campus Revolving Energy Efficiency Funds

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire has joined 32 other colleges and universities to launch a national challenge to invest in revolving funds that finance energy efficiency upgrades on campus. Called the Billion Dollar Green Challenge, the effort is being coordinated by the Sustainable Endowments Institute and was announced today (Oct. 11, 2011) at the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education conference in Pittsburgh.

UNH Researchers: Multibeam Sonar Can Map Undersea Gas Seeps

DURHAM, N.H. - A technology commonly used to map the bottom of the deep ocean can also detect gas seeps in the water column -- a conceptual "column" of water from surface to the seafloor -- with remarkably high fidelity, according to scientists from the University of New Hampshire and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This finding, made onboard the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer in the Gulf of Mexico, will lead to more effective mapping of these gas seeps and, ultimately, enhanced understanding of our ocean environments.

UNH Team Wins NSF Award for ""Sun-to-Ice"" Study

DURHAM, N.H. -- An interdisciplinary team of scientists from the University of New Hampshire's Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) new Frontiers in Earth-System Dynamics (FESD) program. The five-year project, which crosses the boundaries between space physics, atmospheric, and ice core science, will investigate, model, and test the complex, interlinked physical processes at the frontier of the dynamic Sun-Earth system.

The Sky's <em>Not</em> the Limit at N.E. Astronomy Fest at UNH Oct. 14 - 15

The sky's not the limit - rather, just a starting point -- Oct. 14 and 15, 2011, when the University of New Hampshire hosts the first-ever New England Fall Astronomy Festival (NEFAF). The free, family-friendly event boasts a multitude of telescopes for sky-watching, talks by amateur astronomers and professional scientists, and several events with NASA astronaut (and UNH alumnus) Lee Morin.

Pop-up Books On Exhibit at University of New Hampshire Museum

DURHAM, N.H. - An expansive collection of pop-up books is now on display at the University of New Hampshire Museum. The Carel Chapman Movable Book Collection will be on exhibit until Dec. 16, 2011.

An open reception with collection donor Carel Chapman and Movable Book Society director Ann Montanaro will take place Thursday, Oct. 13, 9-10 a.m. Montanaro will give a brief talk on pop-up books. The museum is located on level one in the Dimond Library.

Former Poet Laureate Donald Hall to Read From New Book at UNH Oct. 10

DURHAM, N.H. - Donald Hall, former Poet Laureate and winner of the Frost Medal, will give a short poetry reading from his latest volume, "The Back Chamber," Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at the University of New Hampshire.

The reading, which begins at 4 p.m. in the Dunleavy Reading Room of the Milne Special Collections at the UNH Dimond Library, will be followed by an informal reception and opportunity for attendees to purchase books for signing.
