UNH Space Scientists Available to Discuss Imminent Fall of NASA Satellite

DURHAM, N.H. -- NASA's bus-sized Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is set to re-enter Earth's atmosphere sometime this afternoon with some 26 pieces of debris predicted to survive the fiery fall. The satellite will not be passing over North America during that time period but the exact time and location of re-entry remains uncertain. NASA officials stress that the risk to public safety or property is extremely small.

UNH New Hampshire Presidential Primary Class to Air on C-SPAN This Weekend

DURHAM, N.H. - Viewers of C-SPAN will have a chance to learn more about the New Hampshire Presidential Primary with the broadcast of a class in the University of New Hampshire's one-of-a-kind course on the topic this weekend on C-SPAN 3.

The class, which focuses on the history of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary, is taught by Andrew Smith, associate professor of political science and director of the UNH Survey Center. The course is offered once every four years in the fall and focuses on the presidential nomination process.

UNH Receives Prestigious Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Flexibility

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire has received a 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility, one of just three workplaces in the Granite State to receive the prestigious award.

The university will be presented with its award Wednesday evening, Sept. 21, 2011, at the YWCA New Hampshire in Manchester, which was a Sloan Award finalist. The event begins at 5:30 p.m.

UNH Study: Overweight Older Women Have Less Leg Strength, Power

DURHAM, N.H. - A new study from the University of New Hampshire finds that the leg strength and power of overweight older women is significantly less than that of normal-weight older women, increasing their risk for disability and loss of independence. With more Americans aging and becoming overweight or obese, the study, published recently in the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, dispels the popular image of the bird-thin elder being at greatest risk of becoming disabled due to loss of muscle mass.

Balloon-based Experiment To Measure Gamma Rays 6,500 Light Years Distant

DURHAM, N.H. - Beginning Sunday, September 18, 2011 at NASA's launch facility in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, space scientists from the University of New Hampshire will attempt to send a balloon up to 130,000 feet with a one-ton instrument payload to measure gamma rays from the Crab Pulsar, the remains of a supernova explosion that lies 6,500 light years from Earth. The launch is highly dependent on weather and wind conditions, and the launch window closes at the end of next week.

President Mark Huddleston Delivers 2011 State of the University Address

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire is emerging from a storm but remains unbroken, President Mark W. Huddleston said during his State of the University address delivered Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011.

"Even in stormy times, UNH demonstrates an incredible ability--and the agility--to forge ahead," Huddleston said. He was referencing, in part, the $32.5 million cut made by New Hampshire legislators earlier this year-- the steepest in the history of higher education in America.
