UNH Police Search for Robbery Suspect

DURHAM, N.H. - Police are searching for the assailant in a late-night robbery that allegedly occurred in the wooded area between Health Services and Main Street on the University of New Hampshire campus. A male, who is not a UNH student, reported that he had been hit in the face and his wallet stolen around 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011. The victim was transported to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.

New UNH Data Tests the Exercise ""Talk Test""

DURHAM, N.H. - New research by University of New Hampshire exercise scientists confirms that a low-tech, easy-to-administer test is an effective tool for gauging exercise intensity, but that it does not correspond as neatly as previously assumed to other more objective tests. In a study published recently in the Journal of Sports Sciences, UNH associate professor of kinesiology Timothy Quinn and his former graduate student Benjamin Coons put the so-called "Talk Test" to the test.

University of New Hampshire Announces Hubbard And Pettee Award Recipients

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire has announced the recipients of its most prestigious awards, the UNH Alumni Association's Pettee Medal and the UNH Foundation's Hubbard Award.

James and Anne Loomis, of Dover, are the 2011 recipients of the UNH Foundation's Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy. They will be recognized alongside New Hampshire icon, Eugene Savage, later this month.

UNH Scientists to Build Device for Detecting Contraband Radioactive Material

DURHAM, N.H. -- Researchers at the University of New Hampshire's Space Science Center (SSC), in partnership with Michigan Aerospace Corporation, have been contracted by the federal Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to build a highly sensitive instrument that will detect illicit radioactive materials with pinpoint accuracy from a safe distance. Such materials, located in shipping ports, train stations, truck stops or warehouses, potentially could be used to make "dirty bombs" or associated with a nuclear device itself.

UNH Student Initiative Recycles 57,000 Pounds of Trash Into Treasure

DURHAM, N.H. - Back-to-school shopping came cheaper to savvy University of New Hampshire students this year, thanks to the first-ever Trash 2 Treasure yard sale during move-in weekend (Aug. 26 and 27, 2011). Entirely student led, Trash 2 Treasure sold more than 10,000 items collected from departing students in May. Despite being truncated from three days to two in preparation for Hurricane Irene, the sale brought in $11,750 and diverted an estimated 57,000 pounds of trash from landfills.

UNH Climatologist Available to Discuss Track, Impact of Hurricane Irene

DURHAM, N.H. - Ms. Mary Stampone, assistant professor of geography at the University of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire state climatologist, is available to discuss the track of Hurricane Irene and its possible impact in New Hampshire and New England.

According to Stampone, Hurricane Irene is forecast to become a major hurricane with maximum wind speeds of 125 mph by tonight as it moves over the Bahamas. The storm is expected to peak as a Category 4 hurricane by Thursday then weaken as it moves up the U.S. coast through Sunday.
