DURHAM, N.H.—From a field of 84 college students from across the state, nine teams have been selected to advance to the final round of the 2021 New Hampshire Social Venture Innovation Challenge (SVIC) at the University of New Hampshire. DURHAM, N.H.—Researchers at the University of New Hampshire will study the effect of adolescent bystanders who are exposed to other teens and young adults engaging in self-directed violence (SDV), such as attempted suicide, and how intervention or contact can influence both the teen and the bystander. The $2.95 million grant from the National Institutes of Health will help researchers learn more about how bystanders handle SDV-related situations, how often they happen and if attempts to intercede have been successful in providing positive change.
DURHAM, N.H.—Tulaine Montgomery, co-CEO of New Profit, Inc., a venture philanthropy organization that backs visionary leaders who are scaling innovations and transforming our nation’s broken and inequitable systems, has been named the 2021 Social Innovator of the Year by the University of New Hampshire.
DURHAM, N.H.— The tapered cone shell is popular among seashell collectors for its colorful patterns, but the smooth mottled shells are also home to the cone snail which is capable of spewing a potent insulin-like venom that can paralyze its prey. Researchers at the University of New Hampshire have found that variants of this venom, known as cone snail insulin (Con-Ins), could offer future possibilities for developing new fast-acting drugs to help treat diabetics.
DURHAM, NH — The Global Social Franchise Index, an index developed by the Rosenberg International Franchise Center (RIFC) at the University of New Hampshire, ranks 131 countries according to the impacts social entrepreneurship and social franchising can have on the well-being of their populations. This annual index incorporates country metrics that include people’s health conditions, education levels, incomes, and population size, as well as the riskiness of operating in that country.
DURHAM, N.H.—After a recent overnight hospital stay, Queen Elizabeth II was advised by doctors to step back from public engagements and rest for two weeks. The 95-year-old monarch heeded their warnings but made it clear that it was her ‘firm intention’ to still attend the National Service of Remembrance Sunday, Nov. 14.
WHAT: The University of New Hampshire will host an opening celebration for the new Health Sciences Simulation Center funded by the State of New Hampshire to help address the health care workforce shortages in the Granite State. Its learning classrooms and fully equipped simulation labs that mimic hospital, clinic, primary care and other health care settings give students the experience of practicing in a setting with real equipment and technology.
DURHAM, N.H.— The new Atlantic Marine Energy Center (AMEC), led by the University of New Hampshire in partnership with several East Coast universities, has been awarded $9.7 million over four years from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The center will focus on research and development to address ongoing needs for sustainable renewable ocean energy. It will be one of only four National Marine Renewable Energy Centers (NMREC) in the country.
DURHAM, N.H.—Most people are unlikely to associate seaweed with dairy production, but University of New Hampshire scientists will be working to change that, sharing two grants totaling nearly $13 million to investigate supplementation of dairy cow diets with seaweed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve milk quality and animal health.
New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station researchers André Brito and Alexandra Contosta will lead the UNH portion of both projects, which total $1.5 million.
