UNH Research Finds Venom of Cone Snail Could Lead to Future Diabetes Treatments

DURHAM, N.H.— The tapered cone shell is popular among seashell collectors for its colorful patterns, but the smooth mottled shells are also home to the cone snail which is capable of spewing a potent insulin-like venom that can paralyze its prey. Researchers at the University of New Hampshire have found that variants of this venom, known as cone snail insulin (Con-Ins), could offer future possibilities for developing new fast-acting drugs to help treat diabetics.

UNH Research Center Releases 2021 Global Social Franchise Index

DURHAM, NH — The Global Social Franchise Index, an index developed by the Rosenberg International Franchise Center (RIFC) at the University of New Hampshire, ranks 131 countries according to the impacts social entrepreneurship and social franchising can have on the well-being of their populations. This annual index incorporates country metrics that include people’s health conditions, education levels, incomes, and population size, as well as the riskiness of operating in that country.

UNH-led Atlantic Marine Energy Center Receives Nearly $10 Million From DOE

DURHAM, N.H.— The new Atlantic Marine Energy Center (AMEC), led by the University of New Hampshire in partnership with several East Coast universities, has been awarded $9.7 million over four years from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The center will focus on research and development to address ongoing needs for sustainable renewable ocean energy. It will be one of only four National Marine Renewable Energy Centers (NMREC) in the country.

UNH Scientists Share $13M in Grants to Study Benefits of Feeding Dairy Cows Seaweeds

DURHAM, N.H.—Most people are unlikely to associate seaweed with dairy production, but University of New Hampshire scientists will be working to change that, sharing two grants totaling nearly $13 million to investigate supplementation of dairy cow diets with seaweed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve milk quality and animal health.

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station researchers André Brito and Alexandra Contosta will lead the UNH portion of both projects, which total $1.5 million.

UNH Again Earns Highest National Rating for Sustainability

DURHAM, N.H.—The University of New Hampshire has achieved a renewed platinum rating—the highest possible under the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)’s rating system—in recognition of its ongoing and increasing sustainability achievements. UNH is one of only nine higher education institutions in the nation to earn platinum from STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System. Among the STARS platinum schools in the U.S., UNH has the 5th highest score.

UNH Received $260M in New Research Grants and Contracts in FY21

DURHAM, N.H.—The University of New Hampshire broke its record for competitive research funding, closing fiscal year 2021 with more than $260 million in new grants and contracts, double its FY20 record. DURHAM, N.H. – Nancy Kinner, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of New Hampshire, and an internationally recognized oil spill expert, is available to comment on the California oil spill that is threatening wildlife and wetlands and offer insight into cleanup efforts along the state’s southern coastline. She can discuss lessons learned from the BP Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill and new research findings since then that could help in the response to this and future oil spills.
