Gift Options That Maximize Appreciated Assets
Tax-efficient Giving: Increase the Value of your Gifts to UNH (and to Yourself!)
You can make significant impact--more so than with cash gifts--through these easy and tax-efficient giving options. Harness the power of your investments and keep cash on hand for daily living.
Types of non-cash gifts to consider:
- Stock or Securities: Make a gift of stock or securities to support UNH and avoid capital gains on the appreciation of your stock. These gifts are generally eligible for a full fair market value deduction for income and gift tax purposes. You can make greater impact at UNH without impacting your spending.
- Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA): If you or a family member are 70.5 or older with an individual retirement account (IRA), you can make a tax-free gift to UNH directly from your IRA. This is called a "qualified charitable distribution," or QCD. For those needing to satisfy their "Required Minimum Distribution," you can realize even greater benefits. Avoid the penalties, reduce your taxes and make a difference in the UNH causes you care about.

Other Types of Non-cash Giving
- Donor-advised Funds: Give through your donor-advised fund to maximize your impact at UNH. Your fund sponsor handles all record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts.
- Life-income Gifts: Earn income for yourself or beneficiaries when you create a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) or Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) to benefit UNH.
- Virtual Currencies (cryptocurrency): Virtual currency that has an equivalent value in real currency, or that acts as a substitute for real currency, is referred to as “convertible” virtual currency. UNH may, in its sole discretion, accept gifts of convertible virtual currency if it is determined it can be transferred and liquidated. These kinds of donations are considered non-cash contributions by the IRS. Consult your tax professional for further information on virtual currencies.

Welcome to the Thompson Society!

During the Celebrate 150 Campaign (2012-2018), more than 200 families made planned gifts to UNH, ranging from $10,000 to millions of dollars, which have already started to have an impact on future generations. But the story of legacy goes back to the origins of UNH when Benjamin Thompson left his farm and other assets to establish what would ultimately become the Durham campus of the University of New Hampshire.
The Thompson legacy has impacted hundreds of thousands of lives, and yours can, too.
As a legacy donor, you'll become a member of the Thompson Society, a distinguished group of supporters who have documented planned gifts to UNH. The UNH Office of Gift Planning will work with you to explore options that best meet your philanthropic goals and timeline--whether you wish to make an immediate impact, generate income with your gift, or make gifts through your will.
We look forward to welcoming you to this prestigious membership of generous donors providing support to generations of Wildcats to come, and we are honored to work with you to create your UNH legacy.
