Today our travels take us to Cornish, NH, to Aspet, the summer home of America’s foremost 19th century sculptor of historic figurines, Augustus Saint Gaudens. If you don’t recognize the name Saint Gaudens, think Abraham Lincoln, not the seated Lincoln in Washington, DC, but the standing Lincoln of Chicago’s Lincoln Park. Erected in 1881, the statue is widely considered to be the best portrait of the Great Emancipator. Also of note is the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial at the Boston Common. One of the beauties of visiting Saint Gaudens’s home, studio and extensive gardens is that so many of the artist’s works are found there. Over 100 re-castings of his works and studies are there because the originals remain in place all over the world. Don’t miss the artist’s design for the 1907 US Twenty Dollar Gold Piece (long considered America’s most beautiful coin) or the opportunity to explore Aspet’s 9+ acres of beautiful gardens and trails.

For lunch we’ll journey to the nearby Salt Hill Pub in Lebanon, NH. Starters include Guinness Stew or a

Side Salad.  Entrée choices are (1) Salt Hill Reuben; (2) Risa’s Cape Coddler (smoked turkey and cranberry); (3) Salt Hill Fish and Chips; or (4) The Jake Burger with bacon and cheddar. All entrees are served with Pub Fries and your choice of a non-alcoholic beverage. For dessert enjoy a homemade fudge brownie.

On our way home we’ll stop at Beech Hill Farm and Ice Cream Barn (a 9th-generation family farm in Hopkinton) for a rest stop and a taste of one of their 75 flavors of ice cream or frozen yogurt.
