November 8 - “SMALL TOWN, BIG OIL: The Untold
Story of the Women Who Took on the Richest Man in
the World – And Won” by David W. Moore. In the fall
of 1973, Greek oil shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis
proposed building an oil pipeline on the Isles of Shoals
and the largest oil refinery in the world on Great Bay
near Durham. “Small Town, Big Oil” tells the story of
how Nancy Sandberg, a town leader; Dudley Dudley, a
freshman State Rep; and Phyllis Bennett, publisher of
the local town newspaper, led Durham residents to outorganize
and out-wit the governor, the state media, and
the Onassis cartel to hand them a most humiliating
defeat, and spare the New Hampshire seacoast and
Durham from environmental devastation.
