Publication and Subvention

Publication support and subventions help pay for certain production costs that publishers are generally unable to cover. A subvention might be used to cover the book’s editing and production costs, to keep the volume’s list price down, or to pay a professional indexer to create the book’s index. Support may also be available to defray costs of securing rights to reproduce illustrations for publication, costs of acquiring illustrations, and/or the costs of reproducing illustrations. Translation costs are sometimes included as part of publication support.

Grants and Subvention

Grants for publication and subvention generally are limited to select fields of study, often require membership in the organization providing the support, and are often limited to early career scholars or publication of a first book. In many cases, authors may need to have already secured a formal and current publication contract to apply; sometimes the publisher applies in coordination with the author. However, each sponsor sets its own requirements for who can apply and determines what will be supported by its grants.

Grants for Publication and Subvention provides information on programs offered by a range of sponsors.

UNH Open Access Publishing Fund

This fund supports UNH authors who want to make their scholarly work available to all readers immediately upon publication by paying reasonable publication fees required by many open access publication venues, providing up to $1,000 per publication. A maximum of $2,000 can be awarded to an individual author in the course of a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

Deadline: Open until fiscal year funds are used up
