The Upward Bound Summer Academy is a challenging and personally significant experience for both students and staff.
Our days start early and end late. They are filled with people, activities, meetings, classes and the business of daily living. They are also filled with supporting and encouraging students as well as one another, taking healthy challenges and risks, and finding delight in discovering new friends, ideas, perspectives and interests. An Upward Bound summer demands a lot, but, as a result, its rewards are great!
Teaching-Mentors (Residential Position)
Residential teaching staff are the heart of the summer program! Our diverse and dynamic team comprises a variety of roles, all of which play a vital part in providing students with a rich and rewarding academic and residential experience designed to prepare them for college. Whether designing, teaching, and supporting students in academic classes, coordinating activities and trips, or fostering a healthy residential community through team building, leadership and social activities, every member of the team is a mentor, facilitator, and supervisor. TMs communicate commitment, respect for others, healthy risk-taking, and a strong sense of community.

Teachers (Non-Residential Position)
Upward Bound employs dynamic teachers who want to create hands-on, experiential classrooms. We offer courses in Literature and Composition, Mathematics (through Calculus), Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Foreign Language, Study Skills, SAT Preparation, Research Methods and a variety of electives. All courses are geared towards generating excitement for learning as well as developing concrete academic skills. These are part time positions that require coming to UNH usually two or three days per week for the four-week summer academy (six weeks for Senior Seminar teachers).
In addition to teaching the courses, teachers are required to attend pre-summer training meetings, join us for several community-wide activities throughout the summer and attend a post-summer evaluation meeting. During the summer, teachers will prepare formative and summative evaluations for each of their students. Teachers should be interested in working in a team environment and in making strong connections with students. Teaching certification is not required, but high school or college teaching experience is necessary, and a background check is required.
