Scientific discoveries made by biomedical and bioengineering researchers at UNH over the past five years are transforming how a range of complex health conditions — from cancer and chronic wounds to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s — are being diagnosed, treated and prevented.

An interdisciplinary team of UNH researchers recently shared their findings into how wind and small mammals—eastern chipmunks, southern red-backed voles and woodland jumping mice—help disperse fungi following forest disturbances, such as timber harvests.

Mary Johanna Brown '89, founder and president of Brown & Company Design and Big Brown Books, has been named the University of New Hampshire’s Paul J. Holloway Entrepreneur of the Year.

Brown, who graduated from UNH with a BFA in etching, will be recognized at this year’s Paul J. Holloway Prize Competition, UNH’s premier business plan competition that celebrates student entrepreneurs and innovators.

With the May 1 national deposit deadline passed, the University of New Hampshire’s Durham campus is set to welcome its highest-achieving incoming undergraduate class ever this fall, a significant milestone that reflects key achievements in several areas that align with UNH President Jim Dean’s strategic pillars.

Three UNH students and three alumni received National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, a record number for UNH.

UNHInnovation presented its 2022 Innovator of the Year award to Christine Shea and Kate Siler for IncludeU; and its 2023 award to Jeffrey Halpern for developing and patenting biosensors.

UNH’s status as an R1 research university caught Violet Sullivan’s eye as a prospective student, and as a student researcher she realized exactly what it meant. A competitive distance runner, Sullivan  '23 wondered if blood flow restriction, a common rehabilitative method primarily used in resistance training, could be applied to running.

John Mehrmann is a composer, pianist, organist, choir director, percussionist and teacher who resides in Maine with his wife, Abigail, and two sons. His musical talents encompass many genres and styles, from directing the a cappella choral ensemble VoXX: Voice of Twenty to composing soundtracks for feature films.

More than 1,500 students made presentations during this year’s Undergraduate Research Conference (URC), one of the largest and most diverse events of its kind in the country and a signature annual showcase of student research and scholarly work at UNH.

Although developments in biology over the past 20 years increasingly require researchers to use advanced quantita­tive skills such as mathematics, statistics and programming, biology students continue to often reach graduate school without the needed training in those areas.
