UNH Coastal Response Research Center, NOAA, EPA and Coast Guard Convene Science Meeting to Study Dispersant Use and Ecosystem Impacts of Dispersed Oil in the Gulf of Mexico

DURHAM, N.H. - More than 50 experts and practitioners from government, academia and industry finished a two-day meeting Thursday, May 27, 2010, looking at the potential long-term impacts of the prolonged use of large volumes of dispersants in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. This is the third time NOAA and EPA have gathered top scientists to discuss dispersant use since the spill began. EPA and NOAA scientists are conducting rigorous ongoing monitoring and analysis of the effectiveness and toxicity of the dispersants used.

UNH's Forest Watch Honors Monadnock Regional High School Teacher With Annual Award

DURHAM, N.H. - Gerald Babonis of Monadnock Regional High School received the 2009 Gary N. Lauten Award for outstanding service and commitment to the University of New Hampshire's Forest Watch program at a ceremony held last week on the Durham campus. Babonis has been involved in Forest Watch since 2000.

East Asia Researcher Available to Discuss Growing Tension Between North and South Korea

DURHAM, N.H. - Recent increased tension on the Asian peninsula not only has endangered the security situation in Northeast Asia, but also whether reunification between North and South Korea will ever take place. The situation could push the United States to introduce more military resources into the region and encourage China to be a more dominant political player, according to Chris Reardon, associate professor of political science at the University of New Hampshire.

With $1.1M NIH Grant, UNH Prof Sheds Light on Blindness

DURHAM, N.H. - Rick Cote, professor and chair of the department of molecular, cellular, and biomedical sciences at the University of New Hampshire, has received $1.1 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for his ongoing research on one of the proteins that causes retinitis pigmentosa, a leading inherited cause of vision loss and blindness.

UNH to Celebrate 140th Commencement May 22, 2010

DURHAM, N.H. - Being optimistic and daring to dare were the messages given during the University of New Hampshire's 140th commencement Saturday, May 22, 2010, where 2,200 graduates from 35 states and 17 countries received degrees.

Forecast: New England States Emerging From Recession, But Employment Growth Lags

BOSTON - The New England states are emerging from the national recession, but employment growth will lag, with the region not expected to reach its pre-recession employment peak until the third quarter of 2013, according to Ross Gittell, James R. Carter Professor of Management at the University of New Hampshire.
