UNH Today

Success Begets Success

One of the best ways for UNH students to explore a particular career field and to showcase their talents is to secure an internship. Take, for example, Nicholas Stuart ’20, a Paul College business administration major who interned in Boston with the technology banking arm of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) last summer. Describing the opportunity as highly applicable to his classes and career aspirations, Stuart returned to Durham this fall having accepted an offer to join SVB full time upon his graduation in 2020.

A Professor’s Daughter

UNH students have been a consistent part of Pauline Ikawa’s orbit for decades, beginning when she was a school-aged child milling about her father’s biochemistry lab in Spaulding Hall.

Now, she’s ensuring that she and her family will continue to be part of UNH students’ lives, too — for years to come.

Rallying Around a 50th

Jane Simon Stricker ’70 attended her first of many UNH reunions when she was a child. They were a family affair. Her mother, Selma Bacon Simon ’42, was president of her UNH class until the day she died and over the years presented checks for class gifts to a number of UNH presidents. “She loved them all,” Stricker says. Her father, Edward Simon ’42H, always at Selma’s side, was famous for the reunion hospitality suites he would set up at the Ramada Inn in Dover, welcoming a continuous stream of returning alumni.

Portsmouth Community Conversation

Portsmouth Listens will be conducting a community conversation focusing on equity and inclusion. They are committed to "making Portsmouth the best place to live, work, and play for EVERYONE." Starting in late January 2020, Portsmouth Listens will create a safe space for all community members to participate in a traditional four-week study circle led by trained facilitators.

Benefactors, Friends and Mentors

In the spring of 2017, when Kaitlyn Grant ’20 was a UNH freshman, she was invited to a university event where she would get the chance to thank the donor who created her scholarship in person.

She was petrified.

“I mean, here I am about to meet this guy who is paying for my education... I was scared to disappoint him, and I was nervous,” Grant remembers.
