UNH Analysis Shows U.S. Ranks Low in Government Spending

DURHAM, N.H.—The United States ranks 24th out of 29 countries in government spending as a share of GDP and last in social protection spending, according to new research released by the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire that uses data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. In comparison, the U.S. ranks at or near the top in military, healthcare, education and law enforcement spending.

UNH Research Finds N.H. Residents Support Sharing of DMV Photos with the FBI

DURHAM, N.H.—About 70% of Granite State residents support the sharing of driver’s license photos with the FBI for inclusion in the national facial recognition database, according to new survey research released by the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire. Currently, New Hampshire is not one of the 21 states that shares Department of Motor Vehicles data.

UNH Hosts Industry Day to Encourage Collaboration with State Businesses

DURHAM, N.H.—The University of New Hampshire will host one of its bi-annual industry “sandpits” focused on food and agriculture Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in Huddleston Hall. “Sandpits” encourage innovation and industry/university collaboration by providing companies with direct access to UNH researchers working in the same field. UNH Named Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by NSA, DHS

UNH Research Finds N.H. Growers Can Substantially Boost Strawberry Season

DURHAM, N.H.—Researchers at the University of New Hampshire have more than doubled the annual yield of strawberries and quadrupled the length of the New Hampshire harvest season by growing day-neutral varieties in low tunnel protective structures. The new research out of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station provides a roadmap for growers seeking to increase local production during what is normally considered the off season for locally grown strawberries.

UNH Receives Federal Grant to Help Police Whose Work Requires Review of Child Sexual Abuse Images

UNH Researchers Find Climate Change Increases Risk of Mercury Contamination

DURHAM, N.H.—As global temperatures continue to rise, the thawing of permafrost in Arctic areas is being accelerated and mercury that has been trapped in the frozen ground is now being released in various forms into surrounding waterways, soil and air. According to researchers at the University of New Hampshire, this process can result in the major transformation of the mercury into more mobile and potentially toxic forms that can lead to environmental consequences and health concerns for wildlife, the fishing industry and people in the Arctic and beyond.
