Tom Haines has reported in more than 35 countries and on five continents, on topics ranging from coal to cricket, art to revolution. A former staff writer for The Boston Globe and The Seattle Times, Haines has also written for The Washington Post, Orion Magazine, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Big Bend Sentinel, and elsewhere. He has three times been named Travel Journalist of the Year in North America, and his work has been anthologized in "The Best American Travel Writing" and "The Prentice Hall Reader." 

During the past three years, Haines has been focusing his work on the climate crisis and energy in America, seen through the lens of six heavily reported walks he has taken across landscapes of fuel. That on-the-ground reporting informs a narrative nonfiction book, "Walking to the Sun," recently published by ForeEdge, the trade imprint of University Press of New England.
