Jennifer Seavey

John M. Kingsbury Executive Director of Shoals Marine Laboratory

Jennifer Seavey studies the influence of anthropogenic environmental change on wildlife populations and ecosystem function. Over the last decade, she has honed in on how climate change--especially as it combines with other anthropogenic stressors--influences coastal ecosystem function. She is currently working on seabird ecology, recovery, and habitat management.

As executive director of the Shoals Marine Laboratory, Ms. Seavey oversees Shoals Semester,  a summer program in which students tackle the latest in solar power technology, learn to identify warblers and seabirds, hold mock wildlife crime scene investigations, dissect sharks and lobsters, count grey seals, band gull chicks, teach kids about starfish, search for evolutionary links among intertidal organisms, and generally, learn about the world around them and why managing it wisely is critical to life on earth. Since 1966, SML has offered undergraduate students a unique opportunity to study marine science in the field with faculty from institutions throughout North America. SML courses and internships provide rigorous training in marine subjects and prepare students for careers in the fields of marine and environmental science and sustainability.

Ms. Seavey can speak to the media on Gulf of Maine science, seabirds, undergraduate education, the Isles of Shoals, island biology, ocean conservation, STEM education, and climate change.
