Kristin Smith, a family demographer at the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire, where she is a research associate professor of sociology, said, “Knowing what other people are getting in your company is important, so that you can know if you should be negotiating your salary,” she said.

“It’s interesting that (researchers) can’t fully explain all of the gap and many point to that as discrimination,” Smith said. “I think having laws that allow workers to talk about their wages can be very helpful.”
