The University of New Hampshire School of Law announced the creation of an annual scholarship in honor of Calvin Massey, Daniel Webster Distinguished Professor of Law, during a celebration of Massey’s life and work Sept. 24. Massey passed away last fall after a battle with cancer.
A gift from Martha Massey, Calvin’s wife, allowed UNH Law to establish the annual $2,000 scholarship, which will be given each year to the most outstanding student in Constitutional Law. The first award was presented this summer, to Nathan Kenison-Marvin.
“This is an exceptionally generous and fitting tribute to Calvin’s memory, and we’re deeply grateful to Martha for her determination to carry forward Calvin’s deep commitment to the students of UNH Law,” said Jordan Budd, Interim Dean of UNH Law.
UNH Law and UC Hastings College of Law teamed up to host the event, which was organized by UNH Law professors Alexandra Roberts and John Greabe. The symposium began at UNH Law on Saturday morning and continued at Dimond Hill Farm in Concord on Saturday afternoon, where participants enjoyed a picnic lunch and a nature walk.
The morning began with introductory remarks from Budd and featured reflections from several law scholars, who recalled Massey as a colleague and mentor and discussed his academic work.
“Calvin’s expertise spanned so many subjects, from constitutional law, to property law, to wills and trusts. In responding to his research on topics as diverse as community property, non-delegation doctrine, and sovereign immunity, our speakers illustrated Calvin’s passion for truth-seeking, wherever it led him, and demonstrated the breadth of his legacy as a scholar and thinker,” Roberts said. “It was a treat to gather together so many people on whose academic and personal lives Calvin had left an indelible mark.”
“I was pleased and honored to participate in what proved to be a truly wonderful celebration,” Greabe said. “The fact that so many renowned scholars and dear friends traveled from so far to reflect on Calvin and his legacy speaks volumes about his tremendous impact on so many lives.”
Speakers at the symposium included Dean Vikram Amar from the University of Illinois College of Law, Professor Ashutosh Bhagwat from the UC Davis School of Law, Professor Kate Bloch, Professor Jo Carrillo, and Acting Provost & Academic Dean Evan Lee from the UC Hastings College of Law, Professor Alfred Brophy from the University of North Carolina School of Law, and Greabe.
