There are a wide variety of different residential spaces on campus. Though accessibility is a priority, not all residence halls and room spaces have the same accessibility features. When students require certain features to be present within their room, students may request those features to be present. Commonly requested accessibility supports include:
- Installation of accessibility features (i.e. visual fire alarm, bed shaker, etc.)
- Ability to install specific need-related furniture
- First floor location or elevator access
- Access to an air conditioner
For many accessibility accommodations it is important to notify SAS of the need as far in advance as possible. SAS may have to work with housing to find a specific placement and some specific technology may take time to procure and install. Delays in request times may lead to delays in availability.
Key Things to Know
- Request for the installation of accessibility features should be done in a timely manner. Depending on availability of the technology and the current facilities workload, it may take time to complete a request.
- Due to variations in halls and specific rooms, not all living spaces have the same accessibility features. Some accommodation needs may necessitate placement in a certain building or space.
Student Responsibilities
Students are responsible for…
- Meeting all student accommodation responsibilities.
- Exploring the housing options on campus to understand the features and structure of the different communities.
- Requesting the accommodation as soon as possible. Ideally the student should request accommodations at the same time as they apply for housing.
- Abiding by all university housing policies and procedures.
- Working with housing related to any placement concerns or issues.
Placement Accommodation Process
- Student requests a housing accommodation as far in advance of the housing request deadline as possible - While housing accommodations can be approved throughout the year, it is highly recommended that housing accommodations are requested as close to housing deadlines as possible. UNH has limited placement options, so making a request later in the housing selection cycle will likely impact the availability of placements.
- Student and SAS explore the accommodation need and housing possibilities on campus - Students are required to meet with SAS to discuss housing accommodations. Within that meeting, the student and SAS can also discuss types of placements on campus. It is also recommended that the student reach out directly to housing to discuss placement options on campus.
- Once approved, SAS communicates the approval to housing - Once approved, SAS communicates the approved accommodation to housing. The student's name is added to a housing accommodation spreadsheet. This does not include any information about the student's condition. It includes their name, ID, and approved accommodation.
- Housing works to implement the accommodation - Once housing is notified, they will look for a placement that meets the needs of the student.
- If installable technology is requested, housing will look to acquire and install the technology. The student will be notified about the overall timelines for installation and can discuss any supports needed in the interim with SAS.
- If housing needs to purchase the technology, please note that there could be delays in installation related to availability. Housing will do all they can to ensure needs are met in a timely manner.
No. Not all residence halls have air conditioning. If a student is approved for air conditioning access and lives in a building without air conditioning, housing can assist in facilitating access and installation.
No. There are older residential halls within UNH, and some do not have elevators. If a student requires this support, please contact SAS as soon as possible.
