Access to Noise Reduction Headphones

As a means of reducing distraction, some students may use noise reduction headphones. These headphones do not eliminate all noise but instead reduce overall noise levels. They are not Bluetooth enabled so students cannot use them to connect to their devices. When SAS is proctoring an exam, these can be provided directly by SAS to the student.

Key Things to Know

  • Noise reduction headphones should not be able to connect to other devices nor should they be Bluetooth enabled.
  • Noise reduction headphones should be approved by faculty prior to the exam day.
  • Not all headphones limit outside noise. Appropriate headphones should be discussed with SAS.
  • There are no headphones that completely eliminate all noises. As needed, this accommodation should be discussed along with Distraction Reduced Environment

Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for…

  • Meeting all student accommodation responsibilities
  • Ensuring the headphones are approved by the instructor and exam proctor prior to use.
  • Ensuring headphones are not bBluetooth enabled or able to connect to other devices.
  • Only using the headphones for approved purposes.
  • If borrowing noise reduction headphones, ensuring the headphones are:
    • Returned promptly.
    • Cleaned and disinfected.
  • If using the Testing Center, following all Testing Center policies and procedures as outlined in the UNH Testing Center Handbook.

Yes, but if a student brings headphones, the headphones must be approved by the instructor prior to use. Noise reduction headphones should not be Bluetooth enabled (cannot connect to another device) and should not be able to play music. Instructors may approve a different device, but exam security should be carefully considered prior to approval.

Generally, no. The headphones are only intended to reduce noise levels. Any additional considerations should be discussed by the instructor and the student prior to using the device.
