Access to a 4-Function Calculator

Basic math functions may present a barrier for students expressing their learning in more complex math problem solving. For exams where basic math calculations might not be an essential requirement being tested, some students may need access to a 4-function calculator. 4-function calculators include all the operations necessary to complete the order of operations, square roots, and percentages, but generally do not include additional operations.

There are circumstances that this accommodation may not be reasonable. For instance, if calculation is being specifically assessed, then having access to this support would fundamentally alter an essential requirement. Students with this accommodation are still expected to meet all essential requirements.

Key Things to Know

  • This accommodation allows for the use of a 4-function calculator. Anything beyond that (e.g., graphic or scientific calculators) would need to be approved by the faculty in advance of the exam.
  • This accommodation is not intended to allow for use of technology beyond the calculator itself.
  • The calculator should be approved for use by the faculty prior to the exam
  • Generally, a calculator on a mobile device or computer would not be appropriate as it could allow access to non-essential software. SAS can help provide a 4-function calculator as needed.
  • If work needs to be shown, the student can be required to demonstrate the steps they took using the calculator.
  • SAS has 4-function calculators available if the faculty or student does not have access to one.

  • Meeting all student accommodation responsibilities. 
  • Acquiring or borrowing a 4-function calculator prior to the exam.
  • Sharing the calculator that will be used with the faculty prior to the exam.
  • Limiting device use to what is agreed upon by the student and instructor.
  • If using the Testing Center, following all Testing Center policies and procedures as outlined in the UNH Testing Center Handbook.

4 function calculators are available for purchase at many stores where office supplies can be purchased. They are generally low cost. As needed, SAS can also help by loaning a 4-function calculator to the student for the exam.

Generally, no. Unless students are allowed to use their devices more generally, students should not be allowed to use their phones as a calculator. Instructors may allow this, but please be advised that the student may have access to the internet, notes, or other software not otherwise approved by the instructor. It is usually easier to use a dedicated 4-function calculator. SAS can help provide this as needed.
