An FM System is a wireless device that helps amplify sound directly to the student. It works similarly to a personal microphone, assisting students in accessing communication within the classroom. This helps ensure the student has access to spoken sounds within the room. Students who use FM Systems utilize them in different ways depending on the nature of their condition. Generally, the student will request that the professor wear a specific microphone that connects to their FM system. This microphone will then project the audio directly to the student.
Key Things to Know
- Students will bring the FM system into the class. This may require minor set up so students and instructors are encouraged to talk about what set up is required as soon as possible.
- Students with FM systems may choose to utilize them in different ways. Some students will use it primarily for lectures, while others may also require amplification for small group activities and class discussions.
- Students who use an FM will also require Accessible Audio Content. These students will also likely need preferential seating, but this largely depends on the preference of the student.
Student Responsibilities
Students are responsible for…
- Meeting all student accommodation responsibilities.
- As proactively as possible, talking with SAS about how the FM system will be utilized, as well as other supports that may be necessary to facilitate use.
- Talking with instructors about how to best utilize the device within individual courses.
- Maintaining the FM system (charging batteries, ensuring device is clean, keeping the device safe and secure, etc.).
- If the FM system is on loan from SAS, signing the SAS Equipment Loan Agreement
- Notifying SAS of any issue or concerns with device operability.
Common Questions
Specific use of the FM system will vary. There are times when instructors will need to wear the microphone through the whole class. For instance, this might be the case in a lecture course. In other situations, the microphone might be utilized in different ways. For instance, there could be small group discussions where the microphone is utilized by multiple students. The student and instructor should discuss usage in the context of the course. The SAS AT Specialist can assist in these conversations as needed.
