Shipping Hazardous Materials

Shipping Hazardous Materials

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) is available to assist faculty, staff, and students who make hazardous material shipments. OEHS can provide training and guidance that will help ensure hazardous material shipments arrive at their destination in the safest way possible.

OEHS has developed the following reference materials to assist UNH researchers in the shipment of hazardous materials:

Classification Guide for Infectious Substances

  • This flow chart helps determine if a material is exempt, an infectious substance or a Category B biological substance.

Guidelines for Shipments of Ethanol Solutions by Air

  • Refer to these guidelines when making shipments by air where inner packages contain 30 mL or less of solutions of ethanol between 55-100%.

Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods

  • EHS has developed a Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods in pdf format. A shipper's declaration must be used for shipments of infectious agents. FedEx requires that it be computer generated or typewritten in triplicate.

Small Quantity Exceptions

  • This document is a supplement to the UNH Shipment of Hazardous Materials Manual. It should be used when shipping less than 30 mL or 30 g of a hazardous material.

UNH Guide to Shipping with Dry Ice

  • The UNH Guide to Shipping with Dry Ice is designed to assist researchers shipping non-hazardous materials that are refrigerated with dry ice. To become certified to ship dry ice at UNH, follow instructions in this guide.

UNH Guidelines for Shipment of Formaldehyde Solutions by Air

  • Refer to this guide when shipping formaldehyde in solutions of 10% or less.

UNH Shipment of Biological Materials Manual

  • The UNH Shipment of Biological Materials Manual is designed to assist researchers shipping potentially infectious biological materials. This manual also includes information pertaining to importation, exportation, select agents, and shipping with dry ice. To become certified to ship biological materials and dry ice at UNH, follow instructions outlined in this manual.

UNH Shipment of Hazardous Materials Manual

  • The UNH Shipment of Hazardous Materials Manual offers guidance to UNH researchers shipping any hazardous material other than biological materials and dry ice. EHS does not offer certification for general hazardous materials shipping, but provides shipping expertise to those who request it. Use this manual to begin the process of shipping hazardous materials with assistance from EHS.

UNH Toxic Substances Control Act Compliance Guide

  • This guide describes requirements for domestic shipments and imports of newly synthesized research compounds. It also describes requirements for exports of certain compounds and reporting requirements for allegations of adverse reactions to research and development compounds.
