Elizabeth Ann Virgil, '26Elizabeth Ann Virgil, '26, was the first African American woman to earn a bachelor's degree from UNH.

The year was 1926. UNH's senior class posed in front of Hamilton Smith's white pillars as a photographer took their picture for the yearbook. Near the center, surrounded by classmates with bobbed hair, sat Elizabeth Ann Virgil '26, who a few months later would be the first African-American to earn a bachelor's degree from UNH. Thus did the university become desegregated: quietly, uneventfully, without fanfare or noticeable dissent. Read more from the UNH Magazine »

Alumni Excellence Through Diversity Lecture Program

Distinguished alumnus John Laymon '73, President and sole owner of JRL Enterprises, Inc., one of the largest Minority businesses in Pittsburgh, recently spoke about his UNH experiences as an engineering major and athlete. He also discussed his rise to business ownership and his continued efforts to promote diversity in his field, community, and personal work. Laymon was the first African American to graduate from UNH with a degree in Mechanical Engineering

Ellis Woodward, UNH Alumnus, introduced the Pathways GLBT Mentoring Program at the 2010 Diversity Celebration Banquet. Both the Pathways Connect Mentoring Program and Pathways GLBT Mentoring Program provide students with insight into navigating the post-college world. Woodward and two student members, Justin Linxweiler and Kevin Linton gave examples of how the program helped them build networks and prepare for professional and leadership positions.
