Caroline Hall ’28 shares her internship experience as an Environmental Conservation and Sustainability student
Caroline Hall ’28, from Granby CT, is a B.S. Environmental Conservation and Sustainability student at UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture. Caroline shared her experience as a Remediation Intern at the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP). This internship was made possible by UNH COLSA's SOAR Fund.
The SOAR fund is designed to assist undergraduate students with experiential learning expenses by providing compensation for internships and expenses.
Where did you intern and what was your title?
I interned at the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP), where I was a Remediation Intern.
How did you get your internship?
I applied through the process on CT DEEP’s website, where I submitted my resume, classes taken, and my career interests. They then matched me with a division that best suited my interests and experience.
What did the day-to-day at your internship look like?
I spent most of my days in the office in Hartford, CT. My daily responsibilities usually included work for various projects that I was assigned to, such as managing new contaminant data, organizing emergency water delivery for impacted homes, reviewing statutes for legislative updates, and meeting with other agencies such as EPA and USGS.
What were your favorite parts of your internship? Any memorable moments?
My favorite part of the internship was the wide variety of projects I got to work on. I also enjoyed attending site visits, where I was able to see first-hand the progress my department was making across the state.
What was the most valuable thing you learned?
This internship showed me how much of a team effort environmental policy is - especially when dealing with newly emerging issues. The work that CT DEEP does relies on the help of health officials, laboratories, researchers, construction companies, the general public, and many more.
What are your future goals? Do you think the internship brought you closer to them?
My goal for the future is to be an environmental policy analyst, and I definitely think this internship has helped me towards that goal by giving me experience in the field.
Any advice for students looking for an internship?
If you’re not sure where to start, ask other students from your major or your classes where they’ve interned in the past, especially if their career interests are similar to yours.
