Making a difference, finding community at UNH

When Sophia Clang ’27 (environmental science: ecosystems major with minors in business administration and oceanography) chose to take the leap and apply to be a sustainability intern with UNH's Sustainability Institute, she knew she found her place in the community here on campus. We caught up with her to learn more about her experience.

How did you get excited about sustainability and involved at UNH? 

"I have always been interested in sustainability. From using reusable bags, ditching plastic straws, or having a tax on some plastic items, I am always looking for more ways to be sustainable in my day-to-day life." 

When I first saw the posting about applying to be a sustainability intern with the Sustainability Institute, I instantly knew that it was something I wanted to be a part of. 

As an environmental science major, the majority of my studies focus on ecological interactions between organisms and the environment, while also touching on the impact humans have on the natural environment around us. As human-induced climate change worsens, I was excited to have this opportunity to get more involved in ways that can help reduce our environmental impact. 

What do you love most about UNH? 

I love the community I am a part of and the friendships I've made with classmates and coworkers. I truly feel like UNH is my home away from home. 

What sustainability experiences at UNH have impacted you? 

One experience was working with the UNH community at the Race to Zero Waste basketball game this semester. It felt like we were truly making a difference by educating the community and students about proper recycling efforts and how to ensure that the items you recycle will be accepted. 

What advice do you have for current students, or students considering UNH, who are interested in sustainability? 

It is definitely worth it to get involved. Coming into this [intern] position, I had not heard much about the Sustainability Institute on campus, but since being here, I have learned a lot about how UNH takes steps towards ensuring that this campus pushes sustainable efforts. I enjoy having the opportunity to work with others on projects that help contribute to making our campus more sustainable.
