"It means so much to me, and it means so much to my family and our story. I'm a third-generation Palestinian refugee, and I definitely don't know in their wildest dreams if they imagined that their grandkid or their daughter was going to receive a scholarship like this,"  Alhamdan says, adding, "Everything seems more attainable now that I'm being recognized for my passion."

Jeanne Sokolowski, director of UNH's Office of National Fellowships, describes the Truman Scholarship as the preeminent national fellowship for college juniors seeking a career in public service.

Alhamdan is the one New Hampshire student to be named among the 2019 Truman Scholars.
